Sunday: One more time, or maybe two

Sheff is batting second today, as Leyland mentioned last night. Still no Polanco, and he’s doubtful for Monday.

To review the scenarios, the only way the Tigers don’t play Monday at Chicago is if the White Sox lose today and the Twins win, in which case Minnesota would clinch the division.

On the Rays side, there’s a rumor that they could end up going through a lot of pitchers for short stints today, which would make it feel a bit like a Spring Training game but keep Shields fresh to start one of the first couple games of their division series at Tropicana Field.

TIGERS (74-86)

  1. Granderson, CF
  2. Sheffield, DH
  3. Ordonez, RF
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Thames, LF
  6. Renteria, SS
  7. Ryan, C
  8. Inge, 3B
  9. Santiago, 2B

RAYS (96-65)

  1. Akinori Iwamura, 2B
  2. B.J. Upton, CF
  3. Evan Longoria, 3B
  4. Rocco Baldelli, DH
  5. Manny Aybar, 1B
  6. Ben Zobrist, SS
  7. Gabe Gross, RF
  8. Eric Hinske, LF
  9. John Jaso, C

Well Leyland is doing the right thing in btting Sheffield 2nd. In fact he could have gone a step further and swapped Curtis and Sheffield in the lineup. I’ms sure some of us would like to see how Curtis would look batting 5th.
That was an honorable lineup with Thames in there. Inge at 3rd is not what I want to see but it is the right thing to do for the fans.
Good to see Santiago at 2nd and Ryan at C too.
I hope Zach can have one of his better games today.

Zach has had one of his better games, at least up to this 5th inning where he has ben touched up. Funny how a game can change. This probably doesn’t happen if Cab gets the break and ends up with a bases clearing double last inning. Cab was deeply disappointed in that one. 2nd time Longoria has snagged a bullet off his bat this series.
I was glad to see Sheffield swing on a 3-0 pitch that 1st time up. Be nice to see him get it at home for the hometown fans who are starved for any kind of excitement their players may provide during this wretched year.

Boy, Cab has been getting his RBI chances.
C’mon Cab. Just do it!

Ok. Let’s forget the persona accomplishments now and just finish this game off solidly as a team and close the season down for the home fans on a positive note.
Let’s see some character out of the bullpen.
And give Hessman another AB eh!

Well this bullpen just does not seem to have a clue. Fossum is another one of those guys I hope we are not having to endure next year. Along with Rapada, Farnsworth and Glover. I am not majorly keen on Dolsi but do have to admit he is young and has a chance I guess.
I don’t think the pen will be able to save this one for Zach–more than likely they will give Sheffield another at bat though!

No sooner said than done!
I guess it is fitting that this is the way the season winds up.
Again, I’m not real big on Dolsi either.

Zobrist has absolutely killed us this series.
If they leave Dolso in this is going to look real ugly in the linsescore tomorrow.

Rapada in–I’ll be happy if he doesn’t walk the 1st guy.

What was that I was saying?
JL should take him out. I mean if you can’t throw strikes in a crucial situation then you can’t pitch. I don’t care if the next guy is a LHB.
Punish him and set an example for the others.

This is a lot of sour grapes but you know you can’t have guys play ball with this sort of incompetence always around the corner. There are too many players on this team that look like they mentally collapse. We need more players with a resolve, a mental toughness that enables them to succed not crumble.
That was one of the major factors in this team’s disappointing performance this year. They never really developed a winning attitude becasue they never ever really found a way to believe in themselves and each other.
