It could be a long day in Chicago

The word around the Tigers clubhouse is that they’re looking for a dry window in which they could at least get this game started and then play through the rain. But as Ramon Santiago put it, the window is open and there’s water pouring in. At the moment, it’s raining hard here again after it had lightened up in the late morning. Given that the alternative could require making up a game after the season’s over, I imagine they’ll try very, very hard to get at least one game in today.

The fact that the remnants of Hurricane Ike could be headed up towards the Midwest tomorrow complicates matters further. Even if they play, the Tigers could have a delay — or at least a big flyaround — trying to get to Texas Sunday night or Monday morning.

The only news coming out of today is that Brandon Inge will likely leave the team for a day or two. His grandfather passed away on Thursday, and services are Sunday. He was going to fly out after the game tonight before they scheduled a doubleheader. For that matter, a lot of players were caught off guard by the doubleheader today, since they didn’t announce it until the Tigers were headed back to their hotel or other points in the city for the evening.

In case you didn’t see it in the game preview, Game 2 will NOT be televised in Detroit. Your options there are to listen on the radio or try to catch the Chicago broadcast on MLB.TV.

Here’s the lineup for Game 1 …

TIGERS (70-76)

  1. Granderson, CF
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Ordonez, RF
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Joyce, LF
  6. Sheffield, DH
  7. Renteria, SS
  8. Inge, C
  9. Hessman, 3B

WHITE SOX (81-65)

  1. Orlando Cabrera, SS
  2. Brian Anderson, LF
  3. Jermaine Dye, RF
  4. Jim Thome, DH
  5. Alexei Ramirez, 2B
  6. A.J. Pierzynski, C
  7. Ken Griffey Jr., CF
  8. Nick Swisher, 1B
  9. Juan Uribe, 3B

Look for Dusty Ryan to catch Game 2, though not because of Inge’s loss.

Condolences to Brandon from the blog please, Jason.
My radar is telling me there will be no baseball today, but things could change in the next six hours or so. I just wonder how much the field is being affected. Good line by Razor, however. It’s not raining much in South Bend, as close as that is, so it looks like a football Saturday here. I wouldn’t miss the M-ND game, anyway.
If they do play, I think there’s a hitch in the lineup. Joyce shouldn’t follow Cab because they’ll just pitch around Miguel. As bad as Sheffield has been, he still represents a much larger threat in the mind of the opposition.

It looks like now there will have to be 1 or 2 games made up with Chicago after the season. That could mean Sheff will be going for his 500th homerun on National TV in a playoff atmosphere game. Hope he hits it then.

10 Years From Now; they’ll be from time to rare time saying, “remember that guy Zumaya”?? Dude could throw hard !!! Whatever happened to him??

1000th memo to Tiger Brass. THIS TIME….. when he heals up…… DEAL HIM !!!!!

I really like Zumaya, from a character standpoint to that over relied on and anticipated fastball…… but like I said over and over LAST year, his career will be shorter than Earl Campbell.

OVER and OUT!!! He’s just got “one of those bodies…..”

First time posting, so please forgive ignorance. How do I find out if tomorrow’s 2:05 game will be televised in the Detroit area? If not televised, how does MLB TV work? Thanks for the assistance!–
I just checked, it doesn’t look like the 2:05 game is going to be on tv here. I’ve never used MLB TV, so I have no idea bout that, sorry!

Gambler, by the sounds of Jason’s post the 1st game will be broadcast on TV.
MLB TV, works pretty well. At least the premium package, which offers better resolution, does.
They have an option for $15 where you get the rest of the regular season. If you look hard enough I do believe they will offer the first few day (5-7 I think) with a guarantee. You can cancel withing a certain time period and you will not be billed.
I’ve watched 95% of the games on MLB TV this year and that is probably a good thing because whenever I watch them on Network TV or Blue Jays TV they seem to get throttled.
I hope they are able to get a couple in tomorrow. An added bonus would be that we see a bit more of Dusty Ryan. Then again, that’s no guarantee as I would imagine JL would toss Dane Sardinha in for one half of the DH.

Many thanks for the info. Hopefully they’ll get in both games tomorrow and I’ll be able to ‘see’ them! I like the whole team, but am really rooting for Kenny Rogers to have a solid come back so he can end his season (and/or career) on somewhat of a high note! Thanks again.

I say, the remainder of this debac…….errrrrrrrr, season, should be summed up in 2 words(names):

Dusty Ryan!!! The jury is in on all the other position players this team has. Good or bad.

And it is still raining in GR and the radar does not look good. Oh no, I might have to watch the Lions! There was an interesting article in the Freep today about the possible trade of Maggs. It also talked about our need at shortshop but never mentioned Ramon, and also some other good stuff. I still think a team needs chemistry and JL does not? Hmmmmm. We started with out Curtis, the Inge situation, Cabby being new to the team, Willis not even pitching etc. I am not ready for the season to end, but I know I must now look forward to 2009. Let’s finish the season strong and beat up on the Sox and the Rays! Go Tigers! –Dave
