Larish recalled, Lambert optioned

That gives the Tigers an extra body (at third base) while Guillen is hobbled. The Tigers will wait until Tuesday to start Lambert's spot, meaning they can call him back up once roster expand for September call-ups.

No doubt JL’s rationale for this is that Larish being called up before September 1 means he is eligible for post-season play!!!
.
On the serious side though, at least we get something interesting to watch instead of Leyland’s boys (of whom he keeps saying “the effort is there”.
.
That’s comforting, These players are putting out “effort”. Wonder what the record might be if they weren’t?
.
JL also likes to say he doesn’t know what went wrong this year how he is surprised at their play and is confused etc etc etc.
.
Things have gone downhill since he appointed a rookie as the opening day World Series pitcher in 2006.
.

I wouldn’t call it an extra body. I fully expect Larish to start at third everytime there’s a RH pitcher. Here in the end, can someone tell me what’s the difference between having Carbrera at third vs Larish? This club is going entirely in the wrong direction, putting offense above all other facets of the game. The thing is, Larish isn’t even that good a hitter.
.
More importantly though, is the installation of instant replay into baseball. They went and did it. I think this is a horrible idea. As mentioned by Rogers and Inge, it will cause the pitcher problems. It will take a game that already takes 3+ hours and add to it. Since the crew chief is responsible for choosing to view a replay, it will give managers another reason to argue. “At least LOOK at it!” I can hear them screaming now. And worst of all, it opens the door to replays of other things, and that’s as sure as the leaves changing colors.
.
Bud Selig et al can’t grasp that baseball isn’t football or basketball. I used to love football, now I don’t even watch it. Why? Too many replays. And it appears there will come a day when I no longer watch baseball. The Game is being ruined, slowly and surely.
.
Other thoughts on this?

Dan, there are those that point to saving Rogers for a game six that was never played, but it’s the same idea. I take it back further myself. Remember Neifi?
.
After a 3-year body of work, it appears to me like this: JL took over a team that was primed to do some good things and it took him four months to rein them in. Get them thinking his way. Not too high, not too low, can’t win without a good start from the pitcher, forget how good you were today, tomorrow will be different, etc. In other words, a handbook on how to play .500 baseball.
.
A lot of people were ready to elect him mayor of Detroit which, as it’s turned out, wouldn’t have been a bad idea, but that’s beside the point. I remember spending much of the ’06 season complaining about him.

I pretty much agree with you. The 3rd base situation is, and has been, a complete sideshow. I like the progress that Cab has made at 1st. I was always sceptical of the need to move him off 3rd. Presumabley they knew what they were getting based on his 5 years in Florida. They spoke of his quick, soft hands, they minimized the diminished range he would have compared to Inge. They raved about how important offensive output from the hot corner is.
.
Then PING!.
.
A revelation occurred, he couldn’t play 3rd all of a sudden.
They didin’t give him enough time and they panicked when Guillen showed that Joe Morgans was wrong and he was not going to be a gold glover down there at 1B.
.
I think Cab would have been fine-I think he was dealing with the quadricep injuries and was pressing in the field just like he was pressing at the plate.
.
They seem determined to continue the policy to “create” position players. Inge, Larish, Guillen, Thames, Cab are just some of the projects they have undertaken.
.
Meanwhile they have a very adequate 3B in Toledo that they refuse to give a chance to, even now. Hessman can play. He can stink and he can strike out but hey, join the club! At least get something for him. The guy can hit 30 HRs for somebody.
.
I see your point on the replay. I don’t like it much either but they are going to implement it and if they are they at least could have the good sense to simply have those very infrequent situations of HR disputes resolved immediately so as not to tie up and change the flow of the game. Why not appoint someone with the authroity to make the decision behind the scenes if it can be done conclusively and done within, say 30 -60 seconds. If it something that is inconclusive and not obvious within that time span then simply resort to the initial umpire’s call. This results in no delay to speak of PLUS corrects an important mistake if it was made.
.
I don’t see the need to take the crew off the field and go through all that protocol.
.
And you are right about this being a thin edge of the wedge.
.
Back to Larish, I don’t like the way this has al shaken down but I will be curious to see how he does down there. I guess you never know how things are going to work out.

I still think they should have brought Hessman up to play 3B. He’s been in the bigs before and proven that he can hit big league pitching. If I’m remembering correctly, he’s been hitting better than Larish in Toledo and is a legitimate 3B, not another project. At this point, who cares if Larish brings another left-handed bat? I think the emphasis JL has put on lefty batters is ridiculous. I’d rather have a righty that can hit, and hit for power more consistently.
.
And JL’s whole thing about playing his current lineup through the end of the season instead of getting some young guys experience is frustrating. Why not see what you’ve got in the minors since you really aren’t playing for anything but pride at this point (and by the way some are playing, they don’t have much). I bet the Yankees come in Monday and beat up on these guys. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Pudge have an amazing day at the plate against this pitching staff.

I agree I am not sure that Larish was the guy that they should of called up. I don’t understand why they wouldn’t call up a third baseman (Hessman) when that is what they need, if Guillen is going to be out. Does Larish even play third?????? Whatever does it really matter at this point??
.
Going to the game tonight and will probably be pissed by the time I leave. I also heard that Polanco will not be playing tonight. So it will be the B- lineup.

Rich – I got a good chuckle from your comment on Leyland being elected mayor – looks like he would be an improvement from what is happening in Detroit right now as far as City Hall!
