Sunday: Tigers at Royals

Leyland thought about starting Matt Joyce again today but went with Marcus Thames, wanting to get him some at-bats before they face back-to-back left-handers with the Indians Monday and Tuesday (Zach Jackson and Cliff Lee).

Brandon Inge, meanwhile, gets the start on a day game after a night game as Leyland tries to get him into that mode.

“It’s good for him to learn how to do this,” Leyland said.

TIGERS (64-65)

  1. Granderson, CF
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Ordonez, RF
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Guillen, 3B
  6. Sheffield, DH
  7. Thames, LF
  8. Renteria, SS
  9. Inge, C

ROYALS (55-74)

  1. Mike Aviles, SS
  2. Esteban German, LF
  3. David DeJesus, CF
  4. Jose Guillen, RF
  5. Billy Butler, DH
  6. Miguel Olivo, C
  7. Ross Gload, 1B
  8. Mark Teahen, 3B
  9. Alberto Callaspo, 2B

I think it is a good idea to get Marcus back in there. I like Joyce and feel he is more likely to be our leftfielder next year than Marcus but Marcus deserves to play, Joyce’s LHB notwithstanding.
What I didn’t like hearing is the reference above to Inge. We will be extending capitulation mode to next year if he is “given” the catching assignment regularly. We would would not stand for a guy like Sardinha struggling with the Mendoza line, so why should we accept Inge? If we can’t play him at 3rd where:
A) He is a game changer and
B) He is actually likely to hit better being a happier camper-
Then I think we should trade him.
Inge catching depresses me. It just indicates that the club is in “Hope & Dream” mode still. They have to be more serious about this very pivotal position.
Guillen playing 3rd next year does not excite me. He makes some good plays there but his defense is barely adequate and he makes crucial throwing errors. His defense will not justify his .270 BA, 10-12 HRs and 60 RBIs that he is likely to produce playing full time there. No way. Inge could rival those numbers with a renewed plate approach.
I think Guillen should stick around, don’t get me wrong, but not as an everyday 3rd sacker. If anything, I think he is likely very close to becoming a utility ballplayer/DH here in Detroit.
We need a 3rd baseman, a shortstop, a catcher, a left fielder, a starter and a closer. I’d be surprised if we go outside the organization for more than one of those needs.
More than anything I am hoping for a managerial change. I just don’t believe he can motivate these guys or that he really has a grasp on how to make good decisons without letting blind loyalty and stubborn arrogance get in the way.
That, plus he won’t run Curtis!!

Let’s go –Polly bases loaded—remember how to hit to RF? What happened to that part of your game?

I think Polanco may have had a chance at a a bating title this year if he had not decided to start pulling the ball all the time (after dropping his hands done on the bat grip).
He is very effective when he slashes the ball to RF, probably more effective than anhone I can recall. I was glad to see him hit that ball to the right side a bit more than he has been.

Poor corner outfield play has cost the team 2 runs if not 3 today. Marcus needs to concentrate more and Ordonez just does not get a good read off a lot of balls that are hit over his head.
Fielding has hurt the team a lot this year.

Bottom of 6. Leadoff walk-Butler up.
Uh-oh, starting to look like trouble brewing.

I guess we are seeing why Thames does not get a whole lot of chances to patrol the outfield.
Renteria could have played that ball better–he should have run straight at Gathright.

Why did JL leave KR on the mound so long? Even I could see he did not have his best game going back in the 5th inning. The 6th inning was even worse. Now down 7-3.

Ordonez doesn’t look like he even wants to be out there on that field.
Horrible baseball today–just horrible.
More of the same next year unless we get a shake-up

They look like a bunch of pathetic little leaguers. They should be completely embarressed by their play. Thames Ordonez. Botched all the way around. Pathetic.

You are right. Only one error charged? Against Thames. But how about Renteria, Polanco, Ordonez, and Thames again?

Well that was ugly. Thames has only played two games in the past two weeks, so what can be expected from him? I have no idea why he would be looking up at the runners on the play he botched when the only throw was to thirdbase anyway.
Why doesn’t Ordonez run out that popup to second? You’d expect one of those famous JL tirades, but what’s the point? These guys know he won’t back it up. They also know they’ll all be there when he’s long gone. He’s not going to sit any of these stars down. I know it, you know it, they know it.
Renteria is clueless. I’ve managed girls that could execute that Gathright play better.
Anyway, you all saw it, no point in rehashing. I haven’t heard any mention of Guillen playing leftfield next year. That doesn’t seem like an impossibility to me. Wouldn’t that be easier on him? We can’t possibly make enough trades to fix this mess, so we need to rethink what we do have.
Bottom line, again, is management. Looks to me like they think they can come back next year with the same cast of characters and the results will change for the better. I don’t see that happening. They need to get a new manager in place by the end of October and start planning from there.

Todays game could have been won, but they acted like they don’t care. After they got the first 4 runs on, they shut down… I recall Inge mentioning on FSN, that they are just having fun these days, and playing out the season.. yes, well, that is fine and dandy, but whats the excuse for shoddy, lackluster play. It seems that the only bright spot they Rod and Mario have, is to keep harping on Cabrera’s bulging muscles, and 100 rbi’s.
So what? It mattered more last year when Maggs was into the season, and helped the team, plus might get a batting crown.
Just a disapointing ballgame.. so much could have come from it. They are just struggling to maintain 500 ball this year.

Also want to say, that last year, we had Polly’s perfect fielding, Grandersons triples, steals & homers, and Magg’s batting crown. Granderson was one of the last players last year to ground out into dp! So much talent .. and they supposedly added to all that.. where did it go?
I am sorry to suggest, but it seems as if they were told that they can’t buy the pennant, and this isn’t the year to go WS!

I think Thames and Ordonez need to see an eye doctor – seems like a valid reason for mis-reading those balls yesterday! I still love Ordonez and feel he is important to the team, but am very frustrated with his lack of hustle, I don’t care how good you are and how highly paid you are, you run out every ball and I hope one of the coaches has the **** to tell him that.

That kind of play is what kids watch and think that is the way to play their game.

Kenny had another off day, too bad as I really like Kenny and all he has done for this team. I realized something I have missed from him recently, in one of those “Who’s your tiger” ads, they show Kenny striking a guy out and turning around with a fist pump and yell – that is the intensity I so want to see from this team.

I have to agree that Maggs just doesn’t seem to be “with it” lately. I don’t know if he’s just checked out for the season since the team is out of it, if he has some sort of injury he’s not revealing, or something else. He looks lost at the plate, many times giving half-hearted, weak swings. In RF he seems to show little effort to make plays unless the ball is hit right at him. And not leaving the batter’s box on the check swing bloop to 2nd yesterday was just pathetic. He looks like he’s just mailing it in these days, and that’s not good for the younger guys to see.
