Wednesday: Tigers at Rangers

As expected, Polanco has the day off. He said this afternoon that his knee is still sore but better than yesterday. He doesn’t know he did it, but it’s been bothering him for a few days.

The radar around Arlington and the Metroplex suggests that they should get this game in without problem, but a heavy downpour came through here right around the time the Rangers were getting into batting practice, sending folks scrambling and the grounds crew racing to get the tarp on the field. Hopefully this field drains well.

Santiago is back in the two spot. There was some temptation on Leyland’s part to put some pop in that spot and start Joyce up there, but Santiago had a good game last night.

I sure hope Edgar has a new home next year. That’s at leat the 2nd easy pop-up he has dropeed this year. That is about 2 more than many major leaguers make in a career.
He is just not sharp out there and Nate who gives up hits the way he does can’t afford poor play behind him.
Home run and a triple so far. And the HR to a .150 hitter!
On my ” Wish they are somewhere else next year” List are Renteria, Rodney, Robertson, Sheffield and Jones.

Yikes! Nate is just brutal–they are actually pounding him and it could be alot worse.
Vote him off the island please.

Robertson is a fricken joke. If he’s in the rotation next year i will most be extremely upset with the tigers .

One thing i’m getting sick of is when you talk about getting rid of renteria people (rod & others) reaction is “who do you replace him with?” without even thinking about the possibility that the tigers could be just fine with Santiago..
I think it’s becoming clear that the tigers are going to be bringing back renteria next season… otherwise i would think that they would be giving him more days off in favor of anyone else to get a better feel for what they have. It doesn’t seem like they are planning on having a new shortstop next season.

Every time these guys show us soemthing—-they take it away again. What a season.
Cab and Ordonez aren’t really responding well lately to the lineup change. ordonez actually looks bad. Cab at least is hitting the ball hard most ABs
Aflack Question:

Tovar and Campaneris were the first 2 to play every position I think.

Somebody needs to tell Nate that the objective is to NOT give up homeruns…this is ridiculously absurd.

I wonder if Nate is embarassed? This game is as bad a one as he has thrown all season. The only thing you can see good about it is I don’t think he gave up a single!
On top of everything he doesn’t look even phased by events. Nice contract Nate.

The worst pitcher in the league if you believe his ERA and hits allowed.

Good call Dan, I would also like to vote Nate off the island. 9 hits and all of them for extra bases….very bad.

Interesting how Joyce’s fly ball yesterday was scored an error! Texas guy hits one up there that should be caught by Maggs and he gets a double. And rightly so.
Guess we will see Nate join the disabled list tomorrow. Tendonitis or tired arm (maybe a sore neck from watching the jack shots going out).
Boy this team has played some really ugly ball this year at times. I mean really ugly.

Chad, it could be a combination of his buddy JL paying him back for the world series winning hit years ago and DD wanting to audition him (he had been hitting there for a while) to see if they can spark any interest from another team.
I can’t see him being here next year. He is an embodiement of the failure that was 2008. The fans won’t stand for it.

They also should have given Joyce an error on that triple. The hitter went to third when Matt failed to pick up the ball. Strange scorekeeping in Texas.
Nate was missing his spots by about a foot and they were teeing off on pitches up and over the plate. Pure failure of pitch execution, not the pitches called. They could do him a big favor by trading him to another team and getting him away from Hernandez. CH is ruining our pitchers.
If you talk to anyone associated with the Red Sox, be it fans, announcers, whatever, they’ll tell you the problem with Renteria was his fielding, not his hitting. It was very telling that on Boston’s opening day this year, Edgar was greeted with a resounding chorus of boos. And this is THREE years later. That says something.
Meanwhile, Santiago just continues to hit while sparkling in the field. Razor doesn’t try to do too much at the plate, the exact obvious of the other guys, and he just gets hits. And he still carries the “can’t hit” reputation. As mentioned, even Rod Allen has bought into it.
Things that just don’t make sense………..

Replace “exact obvious” with “exact opposite” please. I have trouble with this laptop.

Guy swings and misses for strike three on a pitch in the dirt so Inge tags him out with his mitt while the ball is in his right hand, turns and flips the ball to the umpire. I love it.
Rangers hitting some big flies tonight.

The pitching reflects the coaching.. this doesn’t say much for all the work CH has put into the kids! Does it?
If Leyland wants to back him.. well, maybe the door is going to be wide enough for both of them and their luggage?
Some of these pitchers have as low as 3 pitches and have worked effectively other years, this year, it has all come apart.. Are hitters that good? , Or, Are they just that good at picking up our pitches?
Pretty hard to say we need to be rebuilding this winter.. when we have some pretty darn good players on paper, but thats all we have.. paper Tigers!

The pitching problem is not so much pitch selection as it is pitch location.

Pitch location, or pitch execution as I called it, killed Nate tonight. He wasn’t coming close. They’d made some kind of adjustment in his mechanics, I guess it was, and it looked like it made him worse. Sometimes, however, it is pitch selection. Verlander falls into that trap.
If Leyland returns, it’s got to be without Hernandez. The proof is in the results, and he’s showing none. He inherited some of this staff from Bob Cluck and everything’s gone downhill since. No one has improved and most have gotten worse. It’s difficult to replace an entire pitching staff, so that leaves the pitching coach as a start. While not common, managers do sometimes replace a pitching coach.
Anyway, here we are talking about next year again. Willis threw 98 pitches in five innings, 55 strikes and 43 balls.
