It's so hot … milk was a bad choice

Not only is it really hot here in Baltimore, it’s really humid, and there’s very little wind to speak of. Being close to the water doesn’t help. The Tigers are sending their guys out for batting practice in groups. If it’s not your group, you don’t need to be outside.

As for the game, Edgar Renteria is back in the starting lineup. He isn’t at full strength with his hamstring, but he’s close enough to give it go. Leyland said he’ll go back to Santiago as a defensive replacement for the later innings if he has to.

Carlos Guillen is not here today. His wife was still hospitalized as of today, but it sounded like she could be released today or tomorrow. Inge is back at third in his place.

All the relievers are available tonight, including Fernando Rodney, thought it might be hard to recognize him. Apparently he decided on the spur of the moment on this hot afternoon to get a haircut — in fact, get all of it cut. Unofficial team barber Freddy Dolsi did the honors as teammates watched.

Aw come on guys, buck up! It’s just a typical summer’s day here in these parts. :-)
.
So we’re going to push a less than 100% Renteria into the lineup? That doesn’t seem like the smartest idea.
.
Interesting article on Sheffield. Sounds almost as if he’d forgotten he’s healthy now. No matter, if he gets it going, our chances increase dramatically.
,
–Rich

actually pretty impressed with JL for DHing Thames and playing Joyce. Thought for sure Sheffield would be in after th HR and near HR yesterday. That move is a little unlike him as Sheffield usually gets the go and Thames the gone, even after a good game.
.
Thoughnt we’d be better off with the SH Santiago though–especially with Renteria “ham”pered.
.
We need Ordonez and Cab to start banging the ball. I still think Cab might respond to be elevated to the 3 hole. But I can live with him batting 5th.
.

I’m trying to give away a couple tix to Sundays game. Between 3rd and left, about 20 rows off the field. Can’t use them…

I don’t know. Seems typical of JL to “rest” the guy who had a big game. I’ll never ever understand that. Yet he sends out a slumping hitter with an injury. It’s like he’s just trying to mess with us.
.
–Rich

I have seats for Sunday’s game right by the Tigers dugout, but square in the sun. 20 rows back in the shade doesn’t sound too bad.
.
–Rich

At the risk of sounding like a broken record—-what is wrong with Placido?
.
He is poppoing up and rolling out and there seems to be no line drives in his bat any more.
.

Hey, nice defense JL has run out there tonight. An injured has-been at short and a rightfielder in leftfield. The man’s a genius.
.
–Rich

Strange to start Edgar. He doesnt have great range when he is healthy. Why play him with a bad hammie. Not much logic there…..Joyce has stats that indicates that he is a suitable #3 hitter. On paper right up there with Marcus.I personally would`nt put him there with his inexperience.Cant figure why he dropped Marcus to 6th,unless its a matchup deal that JL likes…….Well we just gave up 1 unearned run to Edgar.I`ll give JL a huge assist on that one.

Renteria should be CUT, Joyce should’ve had that one.

I really do think that Joyce should be playing RF too. Chiefly because Ordonez does not do nearly as good a job out there at shutting down the gap, covering the line and keeping runners honest.
.
Renteria really should not be playing if he has a bad hammy. Period.
.
Why JL has him in after the break, and after having to be taken out yesterday and against a RHP—I’ll never figure him out.
.
He don’t look good do he?

this is like a carbon copy of yesterdays game.. we’ll take one.. then we’ll give you one.. then we’ll take another and give you 2.. then we’ll take one..
.
I missed the opening run.. what happened on the error?

Dan,I agree with Cab batting 3rd. JL is hurting the club with CG hitting 3rd,and one can only assume that is pure stubborness.CG in no way, shape or form is a 3hole hitter, and unless they legalize steroids,he never will be.And even then he hits far too many ground balls…….Rich,I totally agree about the JL defensive stategy.Again,he is hurting the club with his stubborn off the cuff ideaology…..Edgar cant even run to first base…..I have never had much respect for JL`s managing strategies….But he has taken my skepticism too new celestial levels this year.I try not to be negative, but I really believe that JL has something other than baseball on his mind.

Nicotine makes you senile!

Dan,Again, you bring up a valid point. With Maggs not throwing well, why wouldnt you DH Maggs, put Marcus in left, and Joyce in right…..And,of courseSantiago at short.

Chad—Renteria dropped an easy pop-up. Then Markakis hit a a long liner over Joyce’s head. Joyce got a glove on it but he didn’t get a real good read on it.
.
The ump is giving Galarraga the outside corner to lefties and I hope he can take advantage.

Thanks Dan… you can almost accept it if it was a throwing error or something.. to drop a pop up.. unacceptable.. that happens maybe 2 times all season to a team..
.
Polanco has gotta bunt that better… cost us a run. Bad luck on the double play.

That was bad. Polanco not hitting dicatated that inning. If he is hitting they probably don’t bunt and he swings away. I do like the sac bunt in that situation however. The O’s just played it superbly.
.
The trouble with that kind of inning is that it can pick a team up. Hopefully G-man can answer that and get a nice easy inning.

I’m getting extremely annoyed with these pitches right down the middle of the plate that are getting served up outta camden tonight..

Man, G-man has some trouble with the LHB hitting shots off him. He had Huff in the hole and let him get away. He needs to work that outside corner on thse guys.

hopefully with a runner at 3rd and 1 out.. for the third time today.. we can actually drive him in this time..

Station-station-station baseball. I hate it.

We should have more runs. Just need to keep swinging the bats.
.
–Rich

Polanco is just 9 for his last 48 (.188) with just 1 extra base hit, a double.
.
It would really help if he could break out of it soon..

Good to see Maggs get a couple hits.Need him to get red hot.Armando has got 5 k`s thru 4.If he could just bare down on the leftys a little more,we`ll be in pretty good shape to pick up a win tonight.Come On Tigers

Gallarraga sittin pretty with 74 pitches thru 5.He should be able to go 7 if he can get thru next inning without any damage.

Thats Edgars 14 GDP to lead all Tigers.Birds announcers even questioning JL`s decision to play him…..Welcome to the club

Accuse me of picking on JL and Renteria, But.
.
Why is JL not bunting when Renteria can’t run anyway (with the injury)? On top of this he has been struggling mightily at the plate.
.
Sometimes this guy just baffles me. He talks about how the games count and they can’t afford to throw any away. I say every RUN counts. Why not get an add on run on 2nd base where the next 2 guys have a chance of bringing him home?

Dan,Edgar has only 1 sac bunt all season

He still has only 1.
.
He’s a major leaguer who is known for good bat control. No reason he can’t put one down.
.
Anyway, G-Man threw a pretty good game though the box score will say different. He did make some mistakes with his slider and when he finds a way to cut down on the long ball, he could end up being a very nice starter for us.

We got a couple breaks here to start the 7th. I hope Magglio does not come up and kill the rally with a 1st pitch swinging DP. We’ve seen it a few times this year.
.
Make the guy throw you a few Maggs.

Ugly. Maggs has 2 hits today with bases empty and 2 DP leaving 5 guys when there is someone on. He’s actually not been hitting with men on for some time now.
.
Cab pretty much a carbon copy.

Tigers need to pinch hit sheff for Renteria, due up 3rd next inning.. then put Santiago in.

Maggs 2nd DP of the game.He now has 14 to co-lead with Edgar in that dept. His GO/AO ratio was1.37 before this game.He had 100 GO to 82 AO coming in to this game.Actually, those are fairly poor numbers for a cleanup hitter. He only has 31 xbh, which is very poor numbers for that spot at this time of year.

I think G-Man needs to throw a 3rd pitch. He does have a change and he needs something other than a mediocre fastball to make hitters think about something other than that slider. They can actualy sit on that slider and wait for one to hang.

if you’re gonna pull him.. whey the hell would you not pinch hit for him!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAH!!!! they make me so angry sometimes. STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!!

What the Hell is Leyland doing? He leaves Renteria in to hack away at the 1st pitch. Get Renteria off the bases please. Why is Santiago not pinch running for him?

I would have rather had Santiago bat for him, Rayburn bat for him, Sheff bat for him, Larish bat for him, Verlander bat for him, the bat boy bat for him..

I was so mad when I saw Renteria up at the plate I didn’t see them PR Ramon for him!
.
They really need to sit Edgar down. There was a time he was pretty invisible when playing but now he is too visible. He’s hurting the effort.

Disgusting

Darn—there goes our winning streak!
.

These pitchers should be fined every time they shake pudge off then give up gopher ball!

Lefty, lefty matchups dont always work when your best pitch is the breaking ball.Thats why I wish we would bring up another power pitcher. Most of our guys are contact pitchers and they have their place, but when your in a 1 run gamesometimes you need 2 power pitchers for the late innings.

Yep Dan, that two game streak is just a fond memory. We had it rollin’ too.
.
Anyway, I’ve already stated my opinion on JL. I’m trying to think of who could replace him. Let’s see, you got Lou Brown, Jimmy Dugan, Pops from the NY Knights……….
.
No more piling on for me tonight. I don’t want to drive it into the ground.
.
Oh wait, here’s Sheff. I guess we were waiting for a lefty.
.
–Rich

“Pathetic” pitching – “Untimely” hitting. PATHETIC

Well, we have a crippled shortstop that limps to his position. We have a batting order that goes far beyond atrocious(like, too the moon,Alice). We only have 1 power pitcher in the pen.We have 2 lefty`s that are`nt real effective. We have a right fielder that isnt able to throw with any accuracy right now.We have another right fielder playing left field. We do have a good 3rd baseman, but only for tonight.Tommorrow we go with our old shortstop at 3rd and and the 3rd baseman we traded for will play 1st(doing much better there though,I must admit)We have our 4th #5 pitcher coming up from the minors. We have our/a left fielder at DH.Our regular DH is on the bench. Our closer is going thru a rough period, and we have a manager that is an abstract thinker at best…..I sure dont want to be negative,so I`ll say this,I really like our chances too make the playoffs…..

Dog Pile!!!
.
JL needs to back up his rhetoric. Renteria has to go. That pop-up told more of a story than just being an unearned run in a loss. I think there is almost no chance that Renteria will play here next year. Why delay the inevitable?
.
Ordonez needs to get back into RBI mode. No way he can hit like he did last year but he is our cleanup hitter and we need to be able to depend on him to manage himself at the plate with RISP.
.
Ditto Cabrera.
.
Pudge is close to hitting .300 He is not going to be here next year. Why delay the inevitable? We might be able to get something for him right now and his value will only decline from this point on.
.
Thames will never be a full-time player. He can pound the ball. There are teams and places that can use this type of outfielder. Why delay the inevitable? I like him, I like him a lot, but it is as frustrating to see him on the bench as it is to see him go from boom to bust on a game to game basis when he is playing.
.
Bring up Ian Oslund. We need to get left-handed batters
O-U-T
.
Brent Clevlen is ready to play up here.
.
Let Al Kaline see what he can do as a manager.
.
Be willing to experiment with Carlos Guillen as a short-stop.
.
Teach Brandon Inge how to make contact and hit to the opposite field.
.
Ok there’s more but I’ll stop. Truth is, and I know it, I wouldn’t go off like this if we had won tonight!
.
On the positive side–I actually like what I see in Galarraga. He pitches with confidence, is determined and did not walk a batter tonight. Something has to be done about that long ball problem, but he is a gamer.

The Renteria trade didn’t work out. But in fairness to DD this trade did look good theoretically.
.
They thought they had to move Guillen and they were getting a guy who hit .332 with 43 extra base hits and only committed 11 errors all year.
.
Where is that guy?
.
Memo to Cale Iorg, Danny Worth and Brent Dlugach: Hurry up and learn the ropes

Bruce, you summed it up succinctly. Priceless!!! They should publish that one in the Freep tomoorow!

It’s all too easy to go negative after a loss but unfortunately, a lot of the comments here are true.
.
I’ll cut Ordonez some slack because he has been out for two weeks, after all. Galarraga is a good pitcher but he hung some sliders tonight. I mean, some of those puppies looked like a pinada hanging there. I half expected candy to explode all over the place.
.
Renteria, on the other hand, is a disaster. Just put Guillen back at short, it’s only two months, and leave Inge at third. They can save face on it since Edgar has an injury.
.
It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad, but after all of our howling to play Thames, the one night some of us wanted Sheffield……..he played Thames instead. I swear the man is just messing with us.
.
Joyce is a good young player, but JL went overboard. Matt thrived down in the order, but in the 3-hole he’s wearing a target, not to mention the Player of the Week thing. I don’t think you want to be switching up defenses and setting lineups based on one week’s worth of hitting.
.
On a night when Rodriguez has 4 hits including a homer, you’d think that would be a night we’d win. Anyway, good job, Pudge. And how about the pitchers just throw what he calls for? What’s the use of having an experienced future Hall of Famer back there if you’re not going to listen to him?
.
Okay well, two more games in Baltimore and I’ll be there for both of them, so I’ll see what I can do. :-) The thing is, I’ll be sitting practically right next to JL. If I start yelling things like “This isn’t 1997 and these aren’t the Florida Marlins!”, my wife is under instructions to hustle me out of there. :-)
.
I’ll say one thing: this is a darned interesting reality show.
.
–Rich

I would like to add some comments here but I find that I keep saying the same things over and over like a lot of you do and nothing seems to change. Tonight they lost and it appears both the White Sox and Twins are winning. I hate to say it , I rreallly hate to say it, but I don’t think they can get back into the race. I don’t like pushing a panic button but if the Dodgers want Renteria or the Marlins want Pudge back, why not? Only on the condition that the Tigers get some good fast young players who can contribute soon. Especially a promising catcher. If the season finishes badly, there is a chance they will be losing Renteria and Pudge any way so why not get something for them. I wish they could do the same with Sheffield but I can’t see any team taking on that contract for another year. Is anybody with me on this or have I totally lost it after all the hype we got before the season started?

Next year could be great, though. Cabrera is settling down at 1st. Willis will be back later this year, and ready to pitch next year, I beleive (and pray). Bonderman will be back. Hopefully, Nate will be out of the rotation. Hopefully Pudge, Rentoria and SHeff will be gone (bless their hearts).

This year looks tough. I almost hope they don’t make any run so that there are big changes. The Tigers might want to think about replacing JL next year. (The manager, not the pitcher!)

Rich, I hope the two of you enjoy the games and that they win both of them for you. Your comment about “saving face” is a perceptive one. Much of the way the decisions have been handled this year are based on the saving face factor. Those injuries (real and imagined) have justified some roster movement this year to be sure.
.
Bluster, rhetoric and saving face. It’s a shame that they just can’t run the ball team without all of that detritus.
.
Leyland has been a good manager, for the fans and for the players. But I think he has been dealt a team that will render him pretty ineffective. The exodus of the aging vets like Jones, Renteria, Pudge and maybe Sheffield will improve this team next year. I hope there is enough left in their tanks to get them through this one.
.
I know it is sacrilege but I would even make Ordonez available next year. he would bring a lot in return and I don’t see him being a .300 hitter too many more years. We do need to open up at least one outfield spot.
.
This is not the right time to dissect the team any further but I can tell you one thing that JL said this year that was so far wrong I can hardly believe he said it: He doesn’t believe in “Team Chemistry”!
.
Wonder if the 68 and 84 Tigers would agree with that statement?
.
BTW Miner threw to 2 batters tonight in relief.
Oslund chucked 1 2/3 and gave up a walk and fanned 2. He now has 10 BBs and 53 Ks in 46 IP with a 2.74 ERA
His ERA vs LHB is 1.32
.

Aahhhh, Now I Understand:
.
Edgar Renteria said the infield at Camden Yards, which has never before been a problem, has become “terrible.”

“Too soft, too deep,” he said.
.
That explains the muffed popup in the 1st inning.
.
I didn’t know major leaguers actually dropped those things!!

That ball could have had some detritus on it Dan. Would explain why he didn’t get a good “read” on it.

I enjoy reading all the comments. Where do I start? If you have followed baseball for many years you know that some players have up and down seasons but it is what the manager does with them. I like JL but he looks old and tired. I came home last night to see Maggs hit one to the pitcher with the bases loaded. The next time he came up we were trailing 5-4 with guys on 1st and 2nd and no one out. I know he is our clean up hitter and I don’t remember if Kaline, Horton, Gibson, or Lance Parish ever bunted, but?
Yes Every win and every RUN counts.
Bruce, very nice blog about the players positions.
Rich, I am sure you will be wearing a Tiger jersey.
Dan, I met Phil Garner in the clubhouse when he was the manager and he talked about the players he had were all seperated in differents cliques. I believe in team chemistry!
Oh yea, that Santiago pr move? Yes, my favorite reality show. Go Tigers! –Dave

Steve, my man, what are you smoking? Willis back this year and ready to contribute next year? I sure hope you are right but I wouldn’t count on him ever coming back. Can anyone recall a Major League pitcher being sent back to A ball and then making it back to pitch in the Majors? I’m not talking about a rehab start. I am talking about someone who has lost complete ability to throw strikes. We don’t know if Willis’ windup is being modified since everything is so hush-hush. Maybe we can convert him to the outfield like the Cardinals did with Ankiel.

–Ed–

I read that we owe Shef $20 mil if we cut him, and dont invite him to play next year… “what do we loose if we let go of Edgar Rentaria?”…. ala Jaque Jones?…..he isn’t around in the majors anywhere , is he? (currently, he is .1 and 1 rbi) tsk tsk… *#cough.. mendoza line .#*cough
Sadly, I agree that a youthful, speedier team is needed next year… looking for veterans to me is bunk, when you look at injuries, and declining abilities, and increasing salaries… I can forgive a missed ball by a newbie just coming up, making the league minimum. My blood pressure goes up to see a misplayed catch by a veteran.. then grounding out next innings ..yes, we are all human. We all get into this, because we don’t earn what they earn. I’d have to agree, Inge at Third, Carlos &Santiago at SS, and Maggs DH, with Matt and Marcus in outfield.

I am thinking we need to get Brent Clevlen in the OF too. The jury is still out on Joyce though I think he will pass the test.
.
We really need to get Polanco hitting again. Too many pop-ups and bounding ground balls. He is not hitting the line drives like we are used to seeing.
.
Placido is batting .222 as an American citizen.
.
I wonder whatever hazppened to Aquilino Lopez as the possible 5th starter?
.
I think Lopez is not on the “I like him I like him a lot” list.

Sit Edgar today!!!!
