Cabrera's back

So am I, but that’s not really news so much as it’s the work schedule.

The lineups should be interesting this weekend because of the game times this series — essentially alternating night games and day games for four days. Jim Leyland knew he wanted to play Hollimon once during this night game-day game set, and he decided on tonight against the right-handed Carlos Silva rather than Friday against Erik Bedard. Look for Dane Sardinha to catch at least once, possibly twice this weekend, but not tonight.

TIGERS (42-42)

  1. Granderson, CF
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Guillen, 3B
  4. Cabrera, 1B
  5. Joyce, RF
  6. Sheffield, DH
  7. Thomas, LF
  8. Rodriguez, C
  9. Hollimon, SS

MARINERS (33-51)

  1. Ichiro, RF
  2. Jose Lopez, 2B
  3. Raul Ibanez, LF
  4. Jose Vidro, DH
  5. Adrian Beltre, 3B (four games against Detroit could push him over 20 HRs)
  6. Jeremy Reed, CF
  7. Richie Sexson, 1B
  8. Jeff Clement, C
  9. Yuniesky Betancourt, SS

Good to see Cab back in lineup, maybe he can spark this offense.Lots of youth out there tonight, more speed and maybe the lefty lineup can get to the Seattle bullpen early. We need to beat up this struggling team.Come on Justin, shut em down….Go Tigers!

Bruce .. it says on the right that you posted something here .. But for some reason.. i just can’t see your post.

I see it finally .. this software is weird :)
.
Its good to see Cabby back. I am sure all those who hated DD for trading for Cabby sure didn’t miss him … I did :)

Looks like JV is tossing batting practice out there. Come on JV settle down

The Seattle commentator sounded like it was a record breaking home run … when it was a tame fly ball out ..

Can’t JV have a manageable pitch count once in a while … He seems on his way to another short outing.

Bhavin,I just skipped over to mlive.com and there is an article that JL says they are thinking of making Zumaya a starter. He must havr read our posts, but I never even thought of Zu being a starter. He would definetly be more suitable at getting contact teams like the Twins out. I just wonder how long he can pitch before tiring or getting wild. Might be one of those crazy experiments though.I dont know what to think of that idea.Got to ponder that one awhile

these are just some awful at bats..

Angie moved to Seattle …. wasn’t she on FSN Detroit a few years ago?

Zumaya has little interest in being a starter.. he has said on many occasions how he plans to be and desperately wants to be the closer.
.
Doesn’t make much sense to me..

Maybe JL is trying to motivate him.Steve Kondraci wrote it.Its the first article up on the Det homepage. Great catch by Thomas, Thats the D we are looking for. 25 pitches for JV in the 1st inn.

The ump has a rather wide strike zone..
.
JV did good in the second, getting through in 12 pitches for a total of 37..
.
I’d like to see some better at bats the second time through the order..

I am not so sure on Zu being a starter. He was a good starter in the minors .. but that is where you can blow fastballs by hitters. Considering he doesn’t have the good 2nd, 3rd or 4th pitch … he just lives and dies with his fastball.
.
His temperament is suited for a closer/setup man. We know what he said the other day : Batters expect the fastball from me and i will go right adter them .. etc etc.. So we don’t think that a mature approach.
.
I know JL/DD’s considerations if they are thinking of such a move :
1. We need Starting Pitching
2. Todd Jones is our Closer this year, and Zumaya can’t be.
3. Dolsi showed more promise(and smartness) as a closer. So he might be our closer of the future.
4. Zumaya can’t seem to stay healthy. With his history of injuries, if he is hurt again, he will be 1 of 5 starters. The club can absorb that hit. But as a closer, if he is injured, there would be panic.
.
Even though all these reasons are good, this move, if made, will backfire unless Zumaya masters and throws a couple of other pitches.

It’s a tie game … Polly is our mvp …

Way to go Polly.Mr. Clutch

JV doesn’t appear to have to today.. hopefully Leyland isn’t as late with his hook today as he was with Nate..

Let’s hope he settles down.
.
And the rookies stop taking 3rd strikes. Though Hollimon’s was pretty far off the plate.. Clete, on the other hand, has been up here enough now not to let that happen.

Carlos,Cab,Edgar and Polly have combined for 34 errors in 84 games.I just cant stress enough on how many non made plays like that last throw from Carlos balloons the team ERA.Scored as a fielders choice or a hit, doesnt show up as an error, but should have been out at home or at first.Instead they rule it a hit. These guys just cant play the field and continue to pressure our own pitchers with their defense more than they do opposing pitchers with the bat……..Pitiful…..I just cant see how management doesnt make the correlation…Last night JL defended Carlos fielding again, yet criticizes the youngsters inability to keep the ball down….Whats the point of keeping the ball down,if you boot half of the ground balls and are too slow to get to the other half….Very perplexing

All right Curtis leadoff triple,Bring him home guys….JV right around 80 pitches

Got a break there now can Sheffield get a clutch hit now?

Dan Shef has the lowest slugging percentage of any of the Tiger starters tonight,by far…… 364 and every one else over 400… Nice to see him pick up that RBI. Hope he keeps it up. GO TIGERS

I gotta say .. Hollimon has impressed. I wasn’t so sure early on, if he was ready when he got off to a slow start.
.
Slowly but surely, he has picked up his offense.

JV is at 107 pitches already.

Chuck is getting to JV. The 2 times he visited the mound, JV got out of the inning on the next pitch.

Man on 2nd with no outs and Sheff can’t advance him.

A good performance by JV, esp considering how he started out today.

Bhavin,I like what I`m seeing with Holimon too.Edgar better start picking his game up.Dont think Holimon is a natural shortstop, but he gotta be able to cover more ground than Edgar

KC won,But Chicago lost 3-2……..Hope TJ can close this one out We can get a game back on Chi

Another fine catch by Clete. Its refreshing to see some decent D out there tonight.Way to gi Tigers. KEEP IT UP!
