Wilson has Tommy John surgery

As expected, Vance Wilson had surgery today to reconstruct the elbow ligament that was operated on last year but didn’t hold. Dr. Stephen Lemos performed the procedure this time at Detroit Medical Center.

Bautista traded to Pittsburgh

The Tigers just traded reliever Denny Bautista to Pittsburgh for a Double-A reliever named Kyle Pearson. Bautista had been designated for assignment on June 20. No word on how the Pirates will use him. Supposedly Pittsburgh needs more starting help than relief, but Bautista hasn’t started since 2006. The Tigers haven’t assigned Pearson to anywhere yet; he split his time between Class A ball and Double-A Altoona.

Inge to DL, Sardinha purchased

Just announced: Inge to DL with pulled left oblique. Dane Sardinha’s contract has been purchased from Triple-A Toledo to take his place.

Sheff hits 7th, Guillen stays in 3rd slot

I’m assuming you’re aware by now about Gary Sheffield being activated. He’s batting 7th today and will probably remain there for the time being. Jim Leyland said he likes the idea of putting him in a lower-profile role for now.

Sunday: Padres at Tigers

After a hot couple of days in San Diego, it’s a lot more temperate day in San Diego. Really, you probably couldn’t ask for a better day to wrap up another West Coast trip. This is the kind of day you think about when you think San Diego. By now, you can probably tell it’s a slow Sunday afternoon. Granderson is still in the lineup against lefty, batting eighth. Raburn is giving Polanco a day off at second, which combined with Monday off-day should give me a couple days to rest up.

Inge swings in cage

He’s still dealing with the oblique strain, and probably will be for a while, but he said he felt good taking swings off of soft tosses in the cage. As long as he can do that, he should be able to play, though he admits he’s probably going to feel the effects of the oblique for a little while longer before it recovers.

Bautista designated

For those of you who wondered which reliever would go when Zumaya was activated today, it’s Denny Bautista. He was designated for assignment today, meaning the Tigers have 10 days to try to trade or outright him to the minor leagues.

Tiger Woods golf clinic cancelled

As expected, news that Tiger Woods will undergo season-ending knee surgery means that his scheduled golf clinic next week at Comerica Park has been cancelled. All tickets for the clinic purchased purchased online and by phone will be automatically refunded to the credit card used to purchase them. Anyone who bought their tickets at the Comerica Park box office must be returned for a refund, either in person or by mail:

OF swap

The Tigers activated outfielder Clete Thomas from the DL after the game and optioned Brent Clevlen back to Toledo. Basically, Leyland said they wanted Thomas’ left-handed bat and speed available. However, Leyland said, “I think Clevlen is really, really close to being a Major League player for sure.”

Also, Leyland said he lifted Magglio Ordonez from the game in the seventh because he had a spasm in his right side. He was on the field slapping hands with teammates when the game ended, and he said after the game that he should be OK. With this team and side injuries, though, Leyland didn’t want to take a chance in a game with a big lead.
