Leyland on Thames not starting

He’s going to be perfectly fine,” Leyland said, “but Marcus has been out of character a
little bit. All of a sudden, hitting a home run every day, coming home to the
home crowd, get a little jumpy. He got a little frustrated because he lost a
ball in the lights, which happens to everyday. I don’t care about it. Marcus
Thames is going to play a whole bunch, believe me. But all of a sudden, it’s a
little bit different. That’s why when people ask why you don’t play somebody
every day, you have to watch what you’re talking about.

“Marcus Thames is going to play a whole bunch. But
sometimes people play best when they’re in a comfort zone. He’s going to be
fine tomorrow. He’s fine right now. I talked with him yesterday [about the
ejection]. He knows that wasn’t him. [Umpire] Wally Bell knows that wasn’t him.
But all of a sudden, people expect you to hit a home run every time up. That’s
not fair
. This is a good lesson for Marcus to learn how to deal with some
stuff. And he’ll handle it beautifully. I would guess Marcus Thames will get
two hits tomorrow night. I don’t know if he’ll hit a homer, but I feel real
good with Marcus Thames up there.”

What?

2nd that

like i said, i’m holding most of my enthusiasm back until the tigers start doing this to REAL baseball teams (AMERICAN LEAGUE)
.
once stupid interleague is over, will be the true test of this teams will/heart. closing in on .500. thats nice. hope confidence is back and the heart is there. hope they were hold back until after all star break. hell with all this hoping, you could almost call me an obama supporter…. hope hope hope

Marcus got us hits .. after his home run streak ended.. So basically .. JL is saying he is trying to chill Thames cuz of his ejection .. cuz thats not his nature, to go off on the ump like this and get ejected.
.
I don’t believe it. If JL was in our shoes.. he would say its Bullxxxx. … why? .. cuz Polly went off on the ump too ..
.
Since Clete Thomas, the LH batter and JL’s pet doesn’t play 2nd … Polly didn’t need to clear his head :) .. No offense to Clete, he is playing good .. but sitting Thames to play his favs … c’mon
.
How many more reasons is he going to find to sit Thames ? The guy is a grown man .. and if you think he needs a talk.. give him one .. but don’t sit him for such BS .. How many times was Sheff benched to clear his head .. when he was pushing?
.
The oblique pull was the best thing that happened .. For Sheff’s sake and the team’s ..

Hi all. I’m back at home now, far from Michigan. Although I had a laptop with me all week, the internet access I was getting in hotels was so poor that I couldn’t post. I did manage to read everything, but it was a lot of reading. I have some comments and observations to offer on 1968 Night and Comerica Park, but I’ll save that for tomorrow.
.
Re this Thames business, I have a thought. Leyland’s brother is the one who has pushed for Marcus right from the start, going as far as calling Jim at 3:30 in the morning after one of Thames’ big games last week and saying “told you so” then hanging up. So……..if it was you, would you want to admit that your brother was right? Think about it…….. Okay, this IS a tongue in cheek comment I’m making…….I think. :-)
.
At this point, things are going too good to complain. Clete might be one of those rookies who turns out to be the real deal. It does happen sometimes. Until proven otherwise, I’m going to fall back on my earlier statement that there will be a hot streak, we’ll all get excited, but it’s only after the hot streak ends that we see what kind of team we’ve got. And I agree with the notes of caution regarding interleague play. Let’s see how it goes against teams that know our weaknesses.
.
A positive note: we’re one game under .500 now for the first time since May 1st. A negative note: we’ve played .500 ball since May 1st. It’s the end of June.
.
Another earlier statement I made was that, if we are going to contend, we’ll have a hot second half and it will be exciting as all get out. That one is still on the table.

Jason, I just read your article on Jason Grilli. Enjoyed it, although I must admit I’d forgotten about the entire business. That’s nothing new, I forget a lot of things.
.
Anyway, here’s what we as Tiger fans should do if Grilli enters into a situation this weekend: rise up as one and give the guy a STANDING OVATION. Not only would it be cool, it would probably rattle the heck out of him. Hey, it’s all about winning the game. :-)
.
–Rich

This is the first time this season that the Tigers have more total runs scored than allowed, 382 to 380.
.
–Rich

all good points rich. regard mr. clete- i’ve thought since the first week that he overwhelmingly deserves a shot. he’s got heart and energy. i could really care less about LHB or RHB. he’s a good guy. remember the bunt that nearly killed him?
.
.
.
thames is an enigma. JL clearly doesn’t like him. he deserves a shot, but i think, honestly think, he is trade bait right now. i’d be sad to see him go. but to think of the situation, all these outfielders, and carlos guillen i guess could even be considered that…… where does it leave thames? hung out to dry. i actually and honestly hope if he’s not going to be an everyday player for the tigers, he becomes one for some NL team.

thats my take

When Dumbrowski traded Jurrjens for Renteria, I yelled as loudly as possible…..”YOU IDIOT”……….

ISN’T ANYONE OUT THERE JUST A BIT TICKED OFF about that trade??????? I can’t believe the near dead silence on the off-season stupid trades?????? Each of them…..STUPID!!!

Tiger Fans will, for years, bemoan the day(s) this lame owner pulled off 2 of the biggest blunders of all time.

From day 1 I said that Willis wouldn’t even be in the rotation come July. And Renteria, coming to the AL…. left behind him the best years he’ll ever have. Meanwhile, they give up 2 stalwarts who are still learning to pitch!!!!!

This is unbelieveable to me. No one writes on it, and no one talks about it……..

Oh, and let’s just hope Maybin in a career flop!!!!

Would Jurjens be at the same level in the AL? anyway I wish him well—perhaps he could mimic Smoltz. Also I wish Maybin well—he is just a kid and deserves more respect.Must be late nite blues causi ng negativity.

In my opinion,Marcus did the right thing by getting in Wally Bells face.It was a horrible call.It changed the situation of bases loaded, one out into two outs, runners on first and second….Guys like Marcus and Polly arent going to get the benefit of a close call(Thames call wasnt close) because they`re too nice.Umps dont usually have to worry about any friction from them and it just makes it easier to call it against them, than get into a fuss with an opposing pitcher or manager that may be far more aggressive. If DD was any kind of decent GM the club would pick up the fines that Marcus and Polly incurred…..When a manager gets tossed,he is usually congratulated for defending his team….But,JL`s action almost makes Marcus look like a head case…Just more of JLBS Express…Wally Bell is the one that should be taking the heat for not doing his job.Why didnt JL come out and get thrown out with Marcus. That would have been the only statement that he would have had to made.No words necessary. But the fact is JL defended neither his player or his club. Now Marcus is riding the pine like a penitent imp….Instead JL benches him and comes out with a”He`s going to be perfectly fine”!….Baseball players recognize actions like those of Marcus and JL and temper themselves accordingly to it….It is not I alone who recognizes the irrationality and illogic, accompanied with the irritability of JL.I`ll bet there are even some very professional people out there that would describe JL`s actions as symptoms…..Whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas seems to be JL`s mantra….But I like this one ……..Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me…………Rich, I`m dying to hear what went on at Comerica

Bruce, I mentioned after that game that Marcus got shafted on that call. I agree with you that he needed to let the ump know that. A simple turn and “Wally, you really shouldn’t put that eye appointment off too much longer…..” would have sufficed. Now I know it’s impossible to keep that kind of composure when you’ve been hung out to dry with the bases loaded and you know it wasn’t even close, but he hurt himself and let the ump off the hook by his over reaction. But I agree with you on the point that after the deed was done JL should have come out to defend him. I just wonder……..
.
Mitch, yeah I hated both those trades and have said so numerous times. At the time they were made I think we were in the minority. I swear some folks were peeing their figurative pants. I do like Cabrera, but I still maintain we gave up too much. And I was really looking forward to watching Jair pitch, and Maybin’s development. But, in comparison. JL’s handling of Marcus is mind boggling.

IMO .. the way JL handles Marus is :
.
day 1 : Ok He needs a day off today, to rest
.
day 2 : Everybody needs some playing time. So Thames will play soon.
.
day 3 : We are going against a good righty, so we need Left Handed bats.
.
day 4 : let him play 1 game, “Thames, you are in”
.
day 5 : You are a nervous wreck .. ok ok you helped us win last week, but what have you done lately?
.
day 6 : Tell tiger fans that he is pushing and he will play tomo.
.
day7 : Thames, you are in but i';; pull u in the 7th.
.
day 8 : Need new reasons .. Hmmmmm lemme see.
.
The way he is benched after hitting good .. TOO MANY TIMES .. it makes you wonder….

It’s Thames fault that he can’t score runs even if he on the bench. His will should be stronger .. We all know his power .. Why can’t he just score from the bench … Where there is a will … :)))

Mitch, those trades have been discussed to death ever since they took place, not only here but on any discussion board you can find. What are we supposed to do about it now? I think very few people liked the Jurrjens/Renteria trade. I hated it about as much as any trade the Tigers have ever made. Edgar has been just what I expected; a quiet professional ballplayer who hits maybe .270, is slow afield, and has an annoying habit of bobbling the ball during the exchange. Anyway, check the October archives on the right of this screen if you want the feedback for that one. For the other, go to December.
.
Another thought on Marcus: it’s one thing if myself or Marty say he’d hit 40 homers if he played everyday. It’s quite another when BRANDON INGE

says the same thing. I’ll take the word of the major league ballplayer.
.
–Rich

Marty,I agree 100 percent about the trade.I`ve always been a strong proponet of good pitching and good defense to accompany good hitting and funda mental baseball.I was`nt a blogger when the trades were made, but I assure you that I almost had a heart attack when I heard what we gave up.Just look at the shape we are in for catching, let alone the pitching we gave up.Pudge is one pulled muscle away from making this team a disaster………..Bhavin,Also agree with your points fully.Every day we hear a new take,a different line than the day before. That`s what I like to call the JLBS Express…..I just believe the way they are handling Marcus is WRONG!!….And, If I was at Comerica,Jason Grilli would be getting a standing ovation from me,when he takes the mound.

What baffles me is that we give AAA players a decent shot (good thing, but) .. even though we know they will end up going back to AAA .. but not to someone like Thames, who JL acknowledges, hasn’t got a decent chance.
.
Sheff was on DL .. make Thames the DH/LF .. so he gets to play everyday .. We knew Larrish would be sent back even if he hit .300 .. JL would just give one of his BS quotes. He will get his chance next year . blah blah ..

I truly believe you are all making way to much out of Marcus sitting for two days. I really think it was a combo of two things. For one I believe it was just a righty lefty thing (Although admittedly Marcus hits righties better than lefties.) And that the last game of the Cardinals series Leyland could see that it was probably going to be a grind em out type of game and he was right. Clete was key and he needed speed on the field, as much as he could get on the field and running the basepaths. We already have way too many slow guys on this team and you can tell when you watch other teams we are just slow. And thirdly up to Thames ejection Thames had five at bats he struck out 5 and had one hit. Maybe Leyland just thought he was getting frustrated and needed a couple of days off?? And to say that Leyland doesn’t like Marcus, you are all just crazy and simply unfounded. Marcus is probably the worst outfielder we have on the team. He is a true DH and if Sheff slows down that is probably where he will be sometimes. No matter what he does some of you are never happy.

Excuse me in 5 at bats he struck out three and had one hit. Not struck out 5

mitch-
.
you should take your negativity back to the freep.com blog and blog with those haters there.
.
and just for the record, genious, dombrowski isn’t the owner.
.
regarding jurrgens- who knows how he would’ve pitched in the AL.
.
regarding willis- we traded for cabrera, willis was thrown in the deal. look up the stats yourself on all 6 guys we threw in the pot. not so good. a couple aren’t even playing IN MINOR LEAGUE anymore.
.
and everyone has talked about the jurrgens trade, about a hundred times each.
.
switch to decaff, turbo. take your ritalin, and look at facts. this blog isn’t the detroit free press.com where everyone just hates hates hates. go find a hobby.
.
mike

Good points, GK. To be fair, I think most of the complaints regarding the handling of Thames stem from the history of the situation, not just the past two days. I thought Clete should have been in there yesterday myself.
.
JL may be absolutely correct when he talks about a comfort zone. Unfortunately, his statements really do sound like BS a lot of the time. There have in fact been many questionable personnel decisions, as is probably true with all clubs. When you look at the entire business as a whole, it appears that it’s Leyland who expects the homer every time at bat. So it appears.
.
I do know one thing for sure. If you want a guy to hit you 40 homers, you have to live through the dry spells. If having a 40-homer guy isn’t in your team plans, then I suppose you do what’s been done.
.
This is ongoing, and will be an interesting watch as we move forward.
.
–Rich

Lost in all this is perhaps the best news of all. Ramon Santiago may be rejoining the team on Monday.
.
–Rich

Rich,
.
You hit the nail in the head … it’s not the last 2 games.. but the history … the whole season on what JL has done with Thames.

I don’t think they care if Thames hits 40 homers. I think I am in the minority here, I don’t think that Thames is an everyday player. Again he isn’t that awesome in the field. He is a true DH, and there really isn’t a spot for him on this team for that right now. But my guess is that if he can hold out another year, Sheffield will probably be gone and there is his spot. He would be awesome I think. And I also don’t mean to say that he is a disaster in the field but lets face it, some of these other guys get to a lot more balls.

.
Not to mention a lot of these people have nothing good to say about about Leyland are the some ones that couldn’t give him enough praise in 2006 and early 2007 and calling him the Wizard of Woodward. Fickle Fickle Fickle

And Mike,
.
You are right.People need to understand all those points.
.
Last year, when we finished short, we knew we had a good team, and most fans were pining for something to put us over the top. Mr. Illitch made a big commitment by suggesting getting Cabby.
.
Most fans were hoping we had Cabby before we actually got him. We were looking for impact players and not defense. So we got Renteria. Guillen is still in the lineup, and Renteria with his clutch hitting is an upgrade offensively, over Inge.
.
It’s not necessary that Jair or Miller (maybe in the future)for that matter would do as well in AL. DD said(of course) Verlander, Zumaya were untouchable. Thats what we wanted. Cabby is a long term thing. We have a guy who might be the next A-Rod. His numbers are not really that bad .. he just needs an adjustment period.
.
As you said .. bout the Cabby trade. .. Here’s what DD said happened…. We wanted Cabby .. We offered maybin plus others. They asked for Maybin AND Miller. So we needed a pitcher if we had to give up Miller. So we got Willis and gave up 4 other lesser prospects(comparatively).
.
I don’t blame DD cuz you can’t make ever trade work great in your favor.. and if that happened .. other GM’s wouldn’t want to trade with you. It’s suspicious.
.
Bottom line .. ask any expert .. our team was made better by the trades DD made. It’s a different thing that we needed time to bond .. Chemistry .. I dare say.
.
It’s JL’s wish if he doesn’t believe in team chemistry. I do .. and that exactly is the reason all high payroll teams don’t always win the World Series .. and lesser talented teams than the Yanks do win.

Yes, Jurrjens is pitching out of his mind right now. Yes, Renteria’s not exactly panning out to this point. But first of all, there was a time within the first year of the Smoltz-Alexander trade where we thought we got the better end. Furthermore, I’m not so sure Jurrjens would have pitched as well in the AL. Maybe he just found himself in the right environment.
.
This is why I don’t buy into the “worst trades in history” hype. It’s all bogus. What if Jurrjens learned things from ATL that he never would have learned in DET? What if Smoltz found himself in the right comfort zone in ATL that he never would have had in DET? As we all know by now, a lot of a player’s production can easily be credited to chemistry and comfort level. You simply CANNOT say Jurrjens would have panned out here. You cannot. He’s had the potential, sure, but you truly never know.
.
As for Renteria, the best is yet to come from him, I think. We all know what he can do, and he’s not THAT old. I’d rather see his best later in the season than earlier.

Having problems with transmission? Anyone else having transmission problems? GO TIGERS!!!

Was looking at accuweather.com and they`re saying 50-60 percent chance of rain begginning at 7pm.Hope Chad took rain gear……….If we can get this one in,I think we should have pretty good chance tonight.Verlanders been ptretty sharp of late and the boys are swinging the bat…..Great to see Curtis hitting the way he can again…….Anyway,I`m really hoping we can get to over .500 and keep it going

Anyone out there? Justin just retired the side in the first. My computer doesnt have a new post from Jason with todays starting lineup.Dont know if its my computer,or what.Anyway, if there is a new post after Leyland on Thames not starting and you see this postlplease let me know on this Leyland on Thames not starting comments so I know if something wrong with this computer. Thanks Bruce…………….I`ve been having problems with this thing since 4pm

Hi Bruce..
.
It’s not ur pc .. there is no new post after that one .. I was wondering too why Beck didn’t post lineups.
.
He has said before though, that this blog is in addition to his responsibilities .. guess he is buys with other stories …

Renteria has a leadoff hit again … JL needs to figure out a way to get him in the top 3rd of the lineup.
.
Marcus does too :)

I like it that Curtis is starting against lefties .. maybe JL should explore the possibility of batting Curtis in the bottom part of the order and give Renteria the leadoff spot for an extended period.

Bhavin,Thanks,I was starting to worry here about this computer……..Justin is throwing well, but he is up to 39 pitches after 2inn.I dont think Col. starter is fooling our hitters,I hope they get on him next inning.

I hope Maggs recovers soon …
.
And so much for everyone insisting Maggs was fine :)

Bhavin,JL was saying in the pre game that he thought that Curtis was concentrating more at the plate since he started to play him against lefties, and he thinks it might be helping him hit the righties better. I like Curtis in there against everyone because he is so good at tracking fly balls, that he can win a game with his glove and/or speed even when he is not hitting well.Oh,Oh, whats up with Mags this doesnt look to good……If I`m not mistaken,Edgar has been a leadoff hitter frequently in the NL.

Wow,Pudge just broke Tavares streak of 16 consecutive SB. 96 mph fastball probally helps that caught stealing.

JV, what a job agains Helton. Amazing. Holliday to.
.
Great small ball—I sure like what a little small ball can do.
.
Bad AB by Cab–he needs to do a better job at the plate depending on the situation the club is in.

A spasm in the right oblique in lat is what was just said over the PA at Comerica concerning Mags.Justin has thrown 61 pitches after 3inn.I hope our pen is good tonight.Looks like a short night for Justin…….Boy this computer is acting up,still having difficulties sending.I wonder if its the blog web,me,my computer, or what.

Holy Cow. Francis just pitched one of the best swquences of batters I have seen all year. CAb, Thames and Sheffield and hed didin’t give an inch in doing it. No intentional walk to get past these guys either. Very impressive. We better not let the Rockies score (m)any runs.
.
Sheffield has been helping out since he got back but he is stilll prone to a diet of K’s, DP’s and pop-ups.

whats wrong with maggs?

Ya Bruce…
.
Everyone is MIA today .. no one on this blog :)

Mike, a spasm in his right oblique in the lat is what they said over the pa.Hopefully it is just a spasm and not a tear like Brandon`s

Maggs has Spasms … the dreaded Oblique claims one more … They said lath?? and oblique

I refreshed late … good to see that everyone is back blogging ..

GRAND SLAM !!!!!!!!!!!

hell yeah ryan big time hit!

What a slam … esp since he didn’t start and was hitting clean up ..

looks like they’ve got francis’ number. come on marcus

Dan,I think we just got those runs you requested.Way to go Ryan. They said thats his first grandslam….Where you been lately.Someone said you may have gone to the game last night

No I am thousands of miles away from Comerica I’m afraid.
.

Tough slogging for the tigres as everyone in the AL Central is on a winning streak. Hard to believe what the Twins are doing.

It is really encouraging to see JV reach back and do the job when he needs to. He can pick the club up when he does this.
.
Be nice to see a couple of add-on runs in the 5th as it wioud put the Rockies to bed.

Bhavin,I think the exact words were a spasm of the oblique in the right lat…………..TTwins are behind 6-0 in the top of the 6th in Minn……..KC is losing 2-0 top of the 6th in KC……..JV is at 98 pitches after 5.Wont be long for him now, I reckon…..White Sox won today.

We may not have scored a run there but it is at least good to see Renteria hitting the ball again.

Thanks Bruce ….
.
We have to win today just to keep up … I am dreading the Minn Series.

Why does everyone want to pick on Rentoria? He’s not perfect, but he’s no Rob Deer, for goodness sake. Yeah, his range is not spectacular. And he gets cold at the plate sometimes. But he has won games for the Tigers, and he’s an okay shortstop. Who thinks he’s not an improvement over Guillen? Who were you gonna put at short? And don’t tell me Santiago; this guy hasn’t proven he can hit.

Dan,
.
How can we get JL to give Renteria the leadoff spot ? I think Curtis plays better too when he is lower in the order.

JV is around 120 pitches now. How long does JL leave him in?

JV did say after his last start that he was NOT trying to get strikeouts. He was trying to be more efficient. It’s good that he knows that .. but he doesn’t seem to be going anywhere with it.

Steve,Actually I think Renteria has 4 or 5 gold gloves on his resume

I am glad JL took him out even though there was 1 more out left in the inning. I would like JL to be more pro active yanking the pitchers. Too many times, it’s obvious that the pitcher has thrown in the towel, by his body language, but they are kept in the game.

Dolsi is surely getting rusty :)

I wish he’d pull Miner…

How many times has Dolsi been used recently ?

I wanted miner gone too :) .. thankfully … he got the 3rd out… whew … I am not questioning JL on his decision to pitch miner .. just wish dolsi is used a bit more …

There is a short article over on mlive.com(to right of screen under additional Tiger blogs) about Mags injury………I think Dan should look at it.I cant pronounce or spell those anatomy words.

bhavinmalaviya, I think it would be a difficult decision to lower Granderson. He ignites the team and though I don’t think he will stay a leadoff hitter forever, his presence there is working right now. Renteria does seem to hit better up there but that could have a lot to do with facing LHP too. He is streaky enough to also go into a vacuum there and if he does that and he could be the extra AB at the end of the game.
.
The way they are winning right now I would leave that part of things alone.

I don’t know how you give Hawpe a base hit on that play!!!
.
E6 all the way

Great play by CG, I hope he can find himself a hit tonight and extend his streak.

Grilli is pitching :)

Sorry to see Curtis’s hitting streak end, but as Leyland says, he isn’t much on records.. So? Does anybody feel that moving him out of leadoff , caused him a jinx, and threw off his night?

Well we saw the carousel I hope we don’t see the the Roller Coaster now!!. Let’s go TJ
Rodney is better but his command on the fastball is still lacking.

Cleveland lost 5-0….Minn lost 5-1……..KC lost 5-1….CHW won 6-5…….Come on Tigers we need this one

i could personally care less about a ‘hitting’ streak. who cares. just hit the ball hard, get sac flies, play small ball once in a while. run hard, play hard.
.
players worried about record books always take longer to get that record than players who could care less about records.
.
lets hope todd jones can get out of this 9th inning 1 out double. but its something to expect from jonesy. he certainly has a flare for the dramatics!
.
.
mike

Hhhhhere comes the roller coaster feeling… click , click, click.. down goes the lead!!!
Come’on Todd… get em out!

dan- i’m still waiting on REAL results, AL results from zoom and rodney.
.
.
same with the tigers in general. NL always gets slaughtered in interleague. look at what KC has done…..
.
ehh i’m still waiting for REAL baseball to begin again, not this exhibition minor league major league 2 weeks
.
mike

Great play by Polly.Come on TJ, 1 more out.

The Roller Coaster is running tonight.

Jones deserves more money for providing all this excitement :)

Jones finally blew 1

unbelievable,where is the hook

when u have a 3 run lead and the pitcher gives up 2 .. i wish the manager pulls the pitcher. Most managers leave them in there…

Okay.. tie game.. damage done.. yank him… Leyland.. I am chewing holes in my couch!
NOOoooo! Not another run.. Somebody is crying up above.
Rain!???
just great… kiss 500 ball goodbye tonight.
Ugly.

Just think… one to tie, two to win and Jones gets the win.. not Justin!

Their closer is a lefty.Maybe we can get him.He is 13 of 14 in save opportunity

I feel bad for JV .. not getting the win .. he has some bad luck following him. Then again .. it’s his fault that he uses 120 pitches to go 5.2 innings. He should last longer into games.

So much for JL’s beloved “formula”. Rodney did his part in the 8th but the 3 run TJ save was an accident waiting to happen.
.
We all knew it was a matter of time before Jones would melt like a Tootsie Roll. This is my point about needing top level closer.
.
We can love Todd Jones all we want but he is far too susceptible to falling apart and becoming a batting practice pitcher. I have always maintained that we will not play playoff baseball with Todd Jones as our closer. 2006 was a long time ago-he is 2 years older and has deteriorated noticeably.
.
This was a horrible and untimely way to finish off a game.
.
It will take a miracle to get this one back.

I think I can hear Jason Grilli yelling “IN Yer FACE , LEYLAND!”

Mopar,He`d get a win and a blown save.Quite the dichotomy.Nice whack Polly come on Tigers we need this one real bad.Way to wait Ryan.yesssssssssssssssssssir

Well Cab–Can you do something?

Well .. we got the miracle … Tigers Winnnnnn

Holy crap! They did it!!!

Dan, This team is starting to remind me of the 68 Tigers when they had all those phenominal come from behind wins

Somebody check on Al Kaline… Is he still breathing up in his booth?
Oh My GOD!
I still can’t beleive it. Thats one that you have to see the replays all over again. I thought it was lost. And I thought same exact thing. Holy Crap, they won it!!!

Well Jones was bound to do it sooner than later. But his teammates picked him up. That is a sign of a team that is doing okay, in my opinion. Obviously that is something that I liked about this game. Things I didn’t way way too many walks, to many wasted opportuities on the basepaths, but a win is a win I guess and I am thankful for that.

Cant wait to hear Chad`s take on the game.He is supposed to be there tonight..500 at last.It took half the year, but finally.Keep it rolling Kenny.Lets get some of Dan`s impetus and momentum going for Minnesota

And with The Miracle we may have seen our sleeping giant awakened! This may be what it takes to get MCab hitting like we know he can.
.
Not to rain on the parade but this game, as huge as it was to win after being beaten and demoralized, also pointed out the serious vulnerability we have in not having a reliable closer.

People can talk to they are blue in the face about saves, blown saves , their ratios how he usually gets the job done , blah, blah, blah. I contend that we need to find a solution for the 9th inning. We cannot afford to have breakdowns like this. We got away with this one but no thanks to Jones. None. We won’t be so lucky next time. You can’t win championships if your closer gives up 5 hits (and a walk) in the 9th inning.

I still don’t agree bout TJ. Sure he doesn’t have overpowering stuff. He will blow some saves .. everyone does. He hasn’t got many chances either this year. This is the 1st blown save for him. If it becomes a pattern, then we can yank him.
.
Here are the stats for top closers .. bear in mind the got more opportunities too.
.
F-Rod 31 of 33
Sherrill 26 of 29
papelbon 24 of 28
Nathan 22 of 24
Rivera 22 of 22.
.
.
TJ 14 of 15
.
Only other closer with 3+ saves without a blown save is Lidge .. 18 of 18.
.
We can all agree that Rivera is and has been the best, and since we can’t get him .. TJ is holding his own as far as closers go.

Stats do matter .. and every team … and i mean every team has to deal with blown saves. 1 blown save is not reason enough to start shuffling stuff. By your logic, Boston should panic … since papelbon has blown 4 saves.

We certainly do disagree. IMO there already is a pattern for Todd Jones already. He has these kinds of innings far too often. You never know when it is going to happen and when it does he simply can’t get an out. In his defense he does seem to rebound from these meltdowns and embarrassments. Closers blow saves, as you pointed out above, but if there is a stat for blowing 3 run saves, or 4+ run leads—I bet TJ is on top.

Dan, I understand being edgy on Jones, but I really don’t understand your logic on the closer role. A closer’s job is to close games, not pitch absolute shutdown baseball. We know Todd Jones blew it tonight, and usually he does get himself in some jams. But what separates him from everyone else in the bullpen is his how level-headed he is. I wouldn’t trust Rodney on the mound in the same situation. Not Zumaya or Dolsi or Miner, either. Jones is a mature, experienced and very intelligent pitcher. And, yes, he’s 14-for-15 in saves. How on earth is that unreliable? Just because he puts a guy or two on base a little more often than other closers? Obviously he’s not our closer of the future, but there’s no reason to replace him right now. None.

I know blowing a 3 run game seems scary, dan .. But again .. i would prefer that he blows 1, 3 run game than 3, 1 run games.
.
If blowing saves becomes a pattern, I will join you in calling for a different closer.

I was just about to say the same thing. They all blow them and Dan you have the right to your opinion, and I respect that, but the top closers in the game have blown more than that this year. And Todd will most likely blow another one, but in my opinion he deserves a little more respect than he gets, from a lot of people. Other than one hit nothing was hit hard off of him, and stuff just dribbled in. Sometimes you just get luckey bloops. He didn’t deserve to get booed at the park, he is probably the most likable guy on the team and very humble and admits it when he isn’t what he wants to be instead of shreaking into the shadows like a coward. They all have their ruff outings whether it is hitting pitching or fielding. Anyway that is just my opinion. I really haven’t liked the crowds and all the booing that is occuring at the stadium this year and a little bit last year. What the hell good does it do to boo your own guys??

I agree with you GK .. booing is something that should be reserved for the extreme. Guess people are losing it.
.
A closer who saves 40 games and blows 2 will get a lot of grief in those 2 games . A hitter gets away with a lot of bad AB’s .. esp when he has a sprinkle of HR’s in between. Being a closer is probably the toughest job in this sport.
.
Zumaya/Rodney can have the best stuff .. but they have to learn to use it. It’s a credit to TJ that he knows his limitations and pitches well within himself.

I’m not booing him. I like him. I don’t think he is a good closer. I think he will blow more saves (just like other closers). I have been saying this about Jones for 3 years.
I also think that this team (with al the workd they have done to build it) needs a better closer. This is the area I would have worked on in the off-season. I hope he is lights out the rest of the season. I just don’t believe in “hope & dream” baseball.
.
You guys are right, these are nothing but opinions. I personally don’t have a comfort level when Toddis brought into a game and I don’t think he is a good closer. Nuff’ said.

Dan, I think we’re jumping the gun on Jonesy. I know he had a bad outing, but like bhavin said, even the best blow’em once and a while. I prefer to look at this game as gk noted, one where his teammates picked him up. We know one thing for certain, TJ isn’t going to let this affect him. He’ll come out the next time and go right after hitters–I’ll take my chances with him the rest of the way. Just last week a lot of fans were calling for Rodney’s head, but he’s looked better his last 2 times out. Let’s not ride TJ out of town just yet.

–Ed–

Dan, .. we didn’t mean to imply that you are a part of booing .. I definitely didn’t.
.
If i remember correctly, there weren’t any lights out closers available. If Atlanta needed TJ, we might have been really messed up this year … with the way the rest of the pen worked out …
.
It is a nice healthy discussion … feels good to exercise my brain :)

Again, a good and highly entertaining game tonight. As you can see, we do much better when we have role players in a position to contribute. Any team worth its salt needs that, and we’ve finally gotten it. There were a number of big plays tonight, from Raburn’s bunt to Granderson’s catch and DP, to Raburn’s walk in the ninth. This is winning baseball we’re seeing. A lineup of All-Stars won’t win, but a TEAM will.
.
Todd Jones is one of the classiest players in all of baseball, and one of the most underrated. I’ll take him as my closer any day. He had a bump tonight but the TEAM won the game. Bottom line. Besides, there’s no one to replace Jonesie anyway, so it is what it is. I know most people want to party and scream and high five all the way through the ninth inning while the closer blows away hitters, but that’s not realistic. Sorry to spoil the party. This is baseball, not a party. It’s a tough, gritty game frought with many failures and moments of exhilaration, and that’s the beauty of it.
.
Myself, I have a better time watching the game in my family room than I do at Comerica. We’ve gone from having the best fans in baseball to some of the worst. I hear it every night with the booing, and I witnessed it last week in the park itself. I realize I’ll tick a lot of people off with this, but that’s okay. It has to be said. And I haven’t even posted my review of Comerica Park itself yet, and that’s coming.
.
Meanwhile, I’m just going to enjoy the games. We’re right in the middle of the fun part.
.
–Rich

I might add………..next time I report a possible injury (Ordonez), I hope I’m not taken to task for failing to provide a reference. It’s not like these things come to me in dreams. I’m just paying close attention.
.
–Rich

It looks like we are going to have a lot of the bench guys playing today. Hollimon for Polanco, Sardihna for Pudge and likely Thomas for Ordonez.
.
Yesterday’s win may have been a tipping point for the season. Even though the team has been winning consistently, a win like yesterday’s can galvanize the team. They could have hung their heads in the rain but didn’t.
It was impressive.

So, what a finish last night.
.
Todd jones came in and i expected 1-2-3 get the fireworks done and get me outta here before it rains.. yeah right.
.
Gives up the double.. no big deal… gives up the run no big deal.. gives up the second run… getting nervous.. people really didn’t start to get on him hard until the 3rd run and then they got really angry with the 4th… I think it had as much to do with booing todd jones as it did with booing the fact that Jim Leyland didn’t come get him after he blew the save and gave up the 3rd run, he waited til after he gave up the go ahead run and pretty much lost us the game. And ironicaly the rain starts to fall as the third run comes in..
.
Luckily we were in a spot in the 200 level where the canopy covered us for the most part.. we got sprinkled on so we moved up 1 run and stayed dry. Many people left after todd blew the game and the rain was coming down. It only lasted a few minutes into the bottom of the ninth though and was dry all the way home.
.
Those of us that were left went nuts when Caberas hit fell in the gap. I knew raburn would get around. An excellent finish.. one that i don’t think they’ve pulled off this year.. have they came from behind to walk off in the 9th?
.
I felt really bad for Justin, he just can’t catch a break. I thought the second run off him might go as unearned but i guess not. He pitched decent but his pitch count was high all the way through.. i think he had a good 4th and i thought he’d get through six but no such luck. That at bat against helton really killed him but you don’t mind if you get him out.
.
Rodney was great again which is a good sign.
.
I wonder if raburn will get the start for polanco today instead of hollimon.
.
The fireworks were cool.. but a scary moment when one of the cool ones that shoot up and then do a bunch of spins and kinda go off into one direction and explode.. it shot directly at the people near the pepsi porch and went out of my sight and heard a loud bang.. we didn’t know what happened and i still don’t know if what i heard was it hitting something or it exploding before it got there or if anyone was hurt or what.
.
Anyways that’s all i got. Open house today so i won’t be blogging. Have fun commenting on another tigers win today to put us about .500!!
.
Let’s hope today’s win is a little less “exciting”

Guess Who’s Batting Clenaup Todday?
.
Reynolds is going to have to start the game by facing 3 LHB then MCab.
.
I hope it is an interesting day.

Good start. Kenny had to overcome the ump that inning and pitched quite nimbly out of that jam.
.
Let’s hope the ump is equallly stingy with the strike zone for Reynolds who walks quite few anyway.
.
Hope the guys are discriminating with their batting approach today and get some good pitches to hit.

Thats the 2nd DP by Sheff in this series with men in scoring position and less than 2 outs …

Good to get a couple and we caught a break on Thomas scoring as by all rights he should have been a dead duck.
.
Cab on the basepaths, on the other hand, continues to be somewhat hazardous. With 1 out he doesn’t need to getting to far off that bag.

Thats true bout Cabby .. he still needs to work on base running.

Just got in from church.Heard Tavares got thrown out again.Did anyone see Sardinha`s throw?Does he have a cannon or was it Kenny holding him close…….Wonder why Jason didnt give us starting lineups again today

Kenny need to pick it up or it will be a short outing …

I am among the supporters of Renteria .. but i must admit, he is killing us lately with his defense. Bad errors in these 2 games.

Bruce, it was a good throw .. but its assumed he didn’t get a good lead with kenny pitching .. the throw was a little high and away from the base but actually right on the money, he was tagged on the face before his feet touched the base.
.
Kenny gets out of the jam … great

Kenny is not going to get away with his stuff today. We will need some breaks and good play. Not like the DP ball to Renteria. Renteria is really fighting it right now. The line drive he dropped yesterday is evidence of that.

And there’s the break we need. An impatient hitter helping us out.

Got to be fair though bhavin. Sheff smoked it right to 3rd. Cab should have been closer to the bag with 1 out and 1st base open.

Marty, I agree .. cabby needs work .. but also, … shouldn’t Lamont be coaching him at 3rd?

That is the prettiest DP in the game. Cab very impressive on the fielding and throw to first. Kenny always aware and hustling.
.
Nice 2nd SINGLE of the game Marcus.

I meant of course the throw to second……….sheesh.

Dane a little aggressive on that first pitch swing.

Kenny is looking like Brandon out there in the field. He sure is a great fielding pitcher, and that is saving his butt out there todayCome Tigers I know you can hit this guy

That’s the play Edgar excels at making, the backhand in the hole. He has a strong arm and gets rid of it quickly.

I know Rayburn’s defense at catcher would be iffy .. but isn’t that worth a shot with him hitting good yesterday, and Dane sucking at offense ?

Dan .. Rich .. you guys hear what Mario said bout Dontrelle pitching?

Shittt .. Since Beck is off .. we don’t get enough info .. maggs has been placed on the DL …

Sorry for using that word .. but that was a shock.. i expected him to be out a couple of games … not 15 days …

Nice 1st hit!.
.
I hope Dolsi can hold ‘em. He seems to give up a fair amount of hits and a fair share are the broken bat varitety.

Geez, I hate those 1st pitch swinging DPs.
.
I figure JL will go to “The Formula”. Rodney then Jones. Maybe Zumaya then Jones.
.
If it were me I would leave Dolsi in.

I like Polanco coming in and lo and behold–JL does leave Dolsi in. He should be on a short leash though. Any sign of wildness neds to be nipped in the bud.

Sardinha has had a good game with that hit and also throwing out Tavares.I`m starting to feel a little better about th back up catching role….Freddie is looking very sharp today.I agree.Let him close it out.But even if he gets them out,we`ll probally still see TJ.He was missing over the plate last night.Everything over the heart of the plate.Like to see Dolsi out for 9th to get the chance for a save. He`s earned it.

I really like the way Sardinha calls his game. Dolsi delivered and it was really nice to see that 1-2 slider to Atkins after he fouled a 96 MPH fastball straight back. Smart.
.
The fastball to Spillbourghs was a nice call and a nice pitch. Perfectly set up.
.
If Sardinha can hit a little he is gonna be a good one.
.
Way to go Dolsi and good luck to all for the 9th inning roller coaster ride.

Marcus average must be between270 and 280 Looks like TJ is warming up.Come on Tigers we need this get a couple insurance runs.Wonder how many players first pro hit was a triple?

I was hoping Rayburn was catching cuz of his offense … and Dane make me look stupid :)

Like Ernie used to say, ” All right Tiger fans, fasten your seatbelts.”

–Ed–

Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the back of his mind, TJ must be thinking … these guys cheering me at the ballpark right now were booing me 18 hours ago :)

Perfect game .. pitching wise.

Starter gets a win
Reliever gets a hold
Closer gets a save.
.
Go Tigers !!!!! .. and now we root for the Cubs tonight :)

I really liked what I saw today in Sardinha. He called a good game, threw out Taveras, hit the ball and handled Dolsi superbly.
.
JL did what he had to and handed the ball to his closer who threw well.
.
I also give JL credit for leaving Dolsi in for the 8th. I know he was thinking Rodney or Zumaya but allowed himself to recognize the Dolsi was on and to forego the “Formula”.

BTW, Aquilino Lopez started yesterday for Toledo and threw 6 innings.
.
He gave up 1 run, 2 hits, fanned 7 and walked nobody.
.
I would expect he will be back.
.
On another note–there is another pitcher in Lakelnad besides Porcello and Willis. His name is Guillermo Moscoso.
.
Moscoso (from Venezuela) has pitched >24 innings and has struck out 38 batters and walked only 4 and given up only 18 hits.
.
He threw 5 IP yesterday and struck out 10 allowing just 2 hits. Not a big guy and listed at 6’1″ and 160#
.

This certainly is winning baseball being played. The Dane getting not only his first big league hit, not only a triple, but the game winner. This is so classic of a team on a roll. There will be hard times ahead, of course, but once a team establishes this type of capability, they remain a force to to be reckoned with. They only have to avoid too many injuries to key players.
.
Speaking of Dane, he’s looked good behind the plate the past two spring trainings. Just a little offense and he’s a contributor.
.
You may be surprised to learn that I wouldn’t have pitched Jones in the 9th. My reasoning was that he’d thrown 28 pitches late last night and that umpire Mr. Hernandez wasn’t giving the corners. I was ready to go with Zumaya. After thinking about it, however, I realized that would just look bad. If Zoom succeeded, the howls for Jones’ scalp would escalate. If he failed, you look like an idiot. In the end, the right decision was made and I’m glad it worked out. Besides, if Jones gets booed too much, who’s going to hand out snacks, provide rain delay entertainment, and cool off the left field fans with a hose on hot days? :-)
.
I suppose calling up Joyce is a logical move, but I’d like to see the standard outfield set include Thomas and Thames. The same Thames who got three (non-homer) hits today, and off RH pitching. And as soon as Santiago completes his rehab, I’d like to rest Renteria a little more often. I think he needs it.
.
Does anyone think Clete Thomas is starting to look like Joe Mauer up there? He makes that look so easy. The opposition is bound to start jamming him soon, and I hope he’s ready to make the adjustment.
.
–Rich

Update on Willis, 2 ip, 1 hit, 1 run and 3 bb. Sounds kinda rough! Oh well, here’s hoping!

oh yeah, no K’s.
