Three straight for Pudge

Brandon Inge’s left oblique is still enough of a worry for Jim Leyland that he’s going to rest him again today, coupled with the off day Thursday. He doesn’t like playing Pudge this many days in a row — in fact, he said, he briefly considered catching Ryan Raburn — but the off-day Thursday should alleviate some of the wear and tear Leyland seemingly worries about.

TIGERS (33-38)

  1. Renteria, SS
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Guillen, 3B
  4. Ordonez, RF
  5. Cabrera, 1B
  6. Thames, LF
  7. Rodriguez, C
  8. Granderson, CF
  9. Galarraga, P

GIANTS (31-41)

  1. Fred Lewis, LF
  2. Jose Castillo, 3B
  3. Randy Winn, RF
  4. Bengie Molina, C
  5. Aaron Rowand, CF
  6. John Bowker, 1B
  7. Travis Denker, 2B
  8. Omar Vizquel, SS
  9. Barry Zito, P

Somebody mentioned the caught stealing last night with two outs and Thames up in the eighth. Indeed, that was a strange call, but Leyland said after the game that they put the call on with one out and Cabrera up. He forgot to take it off after Cabrera flew out.

I was one who questioned the stealing call. Maybe sending Guillen to 3rd would have made sense since he can steal a base. But Ordonez has not been much of a base stealer as I recall. He barely made it back to 1st on the Cabrera flyout.
Then you have Thames batting and take the bat out of his hands by having a slow runner try to steal a base. It just did not make any sense to me at all.

Starting Raburn would be tantamount to insanity. Sure give him shot there but it would be nice to have a 6 run lead first.
.

Yeah Dan, That would kind of be unfair to Galarraga.Too much inexperience between the two.

Nice to start off with a couple but man I gotta tell you I am so sick of Pudge failing miserably and always saving his worst ABs with a runner on 3rd and 1 out. He is almost a lead pipe cinch to not produce in those circumstances. He killed a big inning and one that could have set the tone for the game.
.
Guarantee you he will single his next time up with nobody on.

When a guy is truggling and willing to give you a run you need to take advantage. Pudge is completley undiscipined as a hitter and transparently so under those circumstances.
.
Those were big runs out there and that one at 3rd was a gift that went unopened. Giants are still in the game not demoralized and a mistake and a long ball away from tying it up.
.

They’ve got Zito figured out so hopefully they are able to get into add-on mode and give us enough comfort level to throw in a battery of Rodney & Raburn!

Could somebody fill me in on what happened on the error by Cabrera? Was it lazyness?

I don’t think it was laziness. The ball just rolled up his arm, and back behind him. It was just a bad break.

No I don’t think so. I thought he took his eyes off the ball taking a peek at the runner going to 3rd. The Giants announcer said he thought he closed his glove too soon.

HAHAH!!!! You couldn’t have been more right. That made me laugh out loud, and Pudge has his first hit of the day.

My guarantee on a no pressure hit by Pudge was fulfilled.

Afflack Question:

Denny McLain
.
Dizzy Dean?

Anybody else concerned with Ordonez?
.
Nice to see Granderson get some good wood on the ball. He hit it well last time up but to the wrong part of the park.
.
Cab did look a little lazy on the shoulda been dP ball though. And that slide he took into 2nd on Thames’ force out was downright coyote ugly.

Yeah Dan, that’s why I asked Cab’s error was due to laziness. I just notice him dogging it a bit more than the other guys and understand he has loads of talent, but wish his work ethic was a bit better.
.
Ordonez is a little concerning but the way he’s hit over the last season or so leads me to believe he’ll right himself. That is, as long he’s not injured.
.
It’s good to see Polanco continuing to hit the ball well. 3 hits already today. Looks like he’s officially out of his funk as his average is over .300 and continuing to rise.

Pudge strikes out. there’s your six run lead, dan.

Polanco looks like he is going to contest for the batting title!
.
Don’t agree with taking Thames out. You don’t need a defensive move with this lead and I thought it would have been classy for JL to let him have one more hack at the Tiger record. But like Jim says, he don’t care much about records.

anyone amazed at how much time the giants announcers spend talking about fans or boats or the balloon guy and then just once in a while play the game…
.
kinda annoying…

Can someone comment or fill me in on what happened to Thames in the Sixth inning? He pop flied for the out, and Mr. Leyland yanks him and puts in Cleven! WHy?
Did I miss something, that the dugout signaled him to bunt and he played selfishly? How exciting is that, to see a man go 6 long balls in 6 consecutive days.. I was rooting for him to make it.. that is sad!
Its no secret about Marcus’s power for jacking that ball out of orbit. I am sure other clubs know about him and want him.. I think the franchise is just showcasing him.. is he the next one like Jurjens Miller, and Rabello? Shame on you J Leyland. You just showed what a dink you can be. Did we need defense that early in game?

On previous occasions , I have seen Sheff strike out and stay in game.. why? Because Jim owes him the chance to get his 500 homers? Or Edgar “slow hands” murder a rally into a double play ball? When does Marcus THames ever get to become a household name, like Maggs, or Pudge? I think he does quite good in outfield, and is a bright spot on the lineup.
That has to be devastating to have to sit out the rest of the game. My sympathy to the man.

I guess he isn’t the first.. considering the almost shut out performance Galaraga had into the ninth a few weeks ago.. just to be pulled instead of a complete game.
