Postscript on the benches clearing

Both Jim Leyland and Carlos Guillen said they didn’t believe Cory Wade was trying to hit him on purpose. Guillen said the situation escalated when Wade told him to go to first base.

“He hit me and he said, ‘Go to first base,'” Guillen said. “I just said, ‘Hey,’ and he told me to go to … first base. When you hit somebody like that, respect it if you didn’t do it on purpose. But that’s OK. It’s part of the game. He started walking to me, so I [reacted]. … I don’t want to get suspended. I’m not trying to fight. I’m just trying to figure out what’s [happening].”

Replays showed Guillen said something first, then Wade reacted. But it was no big deal. Of greater concern might’ve been Guillen’s right wrist, which he hit on a foul tip on the first pitch of that at-bat. It was still bothering him a little bit. They’re hoping it’s nothing.
