Two scoreless innings for Zumaya

Joel Zumaya pitched two scoreless innings with a hit, a walk and a strikeout. Brittany Ghiroli, our reporter stationed in Lakeland, said that he was hitting triple digits on the radar gun at Joker Marchant Stadium, but that the readings are believed to be a little off. Even if it’s a couple mph off, those are readings that sound like the old Zumaya.

i for one, sure am in anticipation for zoom to return.
.
dontrelle looks done for the night…… 5 walks…… 5 innings……. not real impressed. good news is that oaktown didn’t score…… yay……
.
come on zoom lets get back in the BP! tigers have missed you for almost or easily a year now!!!
.
mike

great news… Hopefully he can continue to pitch well… We could sure use his fire up in the bigs.

– Eric

btw- i openly and whole-heartedly disagree with galarraga being just a ‘rookie’ whose ‘filling in’ for willis. its damn shameful and disrepectful for the tigers upper level management to relegate him to such a role.
.
JL. DD. whoever, should be damned ashamed of themselves. like i tell my ten year old son, personal responsibility is what life is about. not lies, not excuses, not a plate full of bull crap.
.
RESULTS speak louder than HOPES.
.
BLAH!
.
mike

and to prove my point, all the sudden, galarraga gets stuck in a situation he’s not equiped to handle, and boom 3 run shot. this is JL’s fault. galarraga has no business in the pen, he’s a damn starting pitcher.

the difference between starting and relieving, state of mind. starters START the game, 9 innings of hope in front of them. starters that should be starting, stuck in a relief role, cuz of a large, unwarranted contract before a single pitch was thrown, picking the game up with a slight lead, in the 5th….. pressure situation, only 4 innings to hold, 3 maybe depending.
.
and low and behold… JL’s move pays off, big, for oakland last inning.
.
big friggen shocker. i wonder sometimes if JL is purposely trying to make this team lose.
.
mike

Mike you are right. Why take a guy who’s been doing well as a starter and make him the “piggy-back” guy??? We all said that, and it came back to haunt JL. Or is he even coherent enough to regret another bad decision. I, for one, am starting to look forward to his departure. He better stop doing strange things, or he’ll have even the patient Tiger fan base aginst him.
.
He’s got a bit of time before the masses call for his head, but he’d better look in the mirror and do his job.

Maybe JL piggy-backed Galarraga because he knew Armando would look bad and it would give them an excuse to send him back down to Toledo. They’ll get all kinds of grief if they send down they guy who has been the most consistent SP, so if all of a sudden he’s doing poorly/losing games, it’s easy to take him out of the rotation. I don’t know, it’s just a random thought.

I’m not trying to spam, I’ve commented here before, but we have a good discussion going on at this link. I was at the game last night sitting behind the plate. He was officially charted at 95-99. Spotted it very well and had a lot of movement.

I’m with you Rich, can’t wait for this West Coast nightmare to end. Didn’t watch last night- looked at box score this morning and 2 things stand out. Dontrelle 4 innings and 5walks–same old, same old. I say if you must piggyback, do it with Robertson–he’s usually done after 4 anyway. The second thing was Renteria–6AB and 10 LOB!!! How’s that possible? Santiago, Santiago, Santiago, please!!!

–Ed–

Renteria had better be on the trade block and soon! Half of this team should be on the block.. i’d like to see Rogers, Nate, Seay, Pudge, Renteria, and Sheffield all moved. My guess is that the yankees and boston and tampa will all be BUYING, trying to get those two slots that might come out of that division.

This team is done.. if they don’t sweep the white sox next week they are totally done. This is the first time i’ve been willing to say this.

Oh, and can we trade jim leyland and his bull*@#$ coaching staff who seem to have the uncanny ability to make everyone they coach WORSE!

As I mentioned in the previous BLOG. It’s hard to imagaine a team emerging from this band of misfits. JL is as much to blame as the players. The only guys out there that really look like they are really flat-out trying are Granderson and Thomas. Polanco too I guess but as far as wiling to do anything to “not lose” I just don’t see the determination. It won’t be long before Grandy stops risiking his career making diving catches if it doesn’t matter to his teammates.
.
JL is making bad decisions. Inexplicable at times. Why take out Galarraga when he has shown he can easily throw 6 innings and was cruising along after the 3 run HR? Wouldn’t that be the opportunity to not have to go to your bullpen?
.
His ” I have a plan that I will implement hell or higwater” style is hindering the team as much as anything. i.e “bring upt the guy from Toledo and get him in the game right away”. That was mistake #1 Galarraga is stretched out and ready to throw the 5 innings we needed. When he put Fossum in to face the LHB (hello Jim, we knew they had LHB to begin with) it started the litany of damage control from the bullpen. Fossum was OK, I think, giving up a weak off-field single but then he was taken becasuse there was ONE RHB (Brown) to face with 1 out and a nan 1st??? What about the THREE LHB following Brown???.
.
Weird. Bizarre. Inexplicable. Stupid.
.
That was mistake #2
.
Not bunting with Renteria. Not bunting with Raburn. Not bunting with anybody.
.
No stealing; virtually no hit and running.
.
Pinch running for Raburn? Made far more sense if he was going to put Clete in anyway, to have simply PH for Raburn against the RHP.
.
He is back to the “hope and dream” world of last year. ie. Put Miner in , say he is your setup man and maybe if you say it a few times then it will happen. Miner will never be a setup man.
.
And what is he going to do with the bottom of the lineup? Pudge can be downright pitiful at times and Renteria looks resigned and almost uninterested.
.
This is a broken team right now. One that is playing with no discernible confidence.
.
I would love to know what guys like Joyce and Larish think when they come up with their wide eyes and hopeful expectations to the bigs and are introducet to an atmosphere of complacency, dysfunction and incompetence.
.
Welcome to the bigs boys. Just make sure you have a couple of good indidvidual stats years, get a long term contract and then hunker down and take it easy.
.
Al Kaline for manager!!

Let me co-sign that, Dan. Leyland is done. He can blame it on a lack of hitting all he wants, but he’s shown an astounding inability to manage tight low run games.
.
He’s lost all credibility out here among the fans, too. He never intended to have Galarraga finish that game, this was all about getting Willis into the rotation at Armando’s expense. Galarraga must be very irritating to Leyland, what with the way he continues to get hitters out. So why make up all that “piggyback” garbage? Three innings, 50 pitches, thank you and good night. And before anyone says it was Galarraga that allowed the three runs, I’d like to point out that a starting pitcher usually has an uneven first inning of work, and this was compounded by having his “start” begin in the fifth inning. I wasn’t surprised he walked a couple, nor was I surprised when he settled into his usual groove. I was VERY surprised when JL lifted him after the seventh, as if Galarraga had thrown 100 pitches or something. That was foolish, if I didn’t make that clear enough from the posts I made at the time he did it.
.
Mid-season firings are tricky. Do you replace JL with Lamont or McClenndon and keep the same coaching staff for the remainder of the season? Promote someone from within the organization?
.
What an incredible season this has become.
.
–Rich

I think their will increased scrutiny coming JL’s way. Especially after the Wings finish their season. Some of those same fans will either be expecting success or really frustrated with their sprts teams choking when it counts.
.
It is a pity it has come to this, but I think you are right Rich. Peoiple have had enough. It’s their team. They fork out the big bucks to fill that stadium game after game.
.
They are tired of the ineptitude. Leyland is an interesting guy who was good for this team. Unfortunately when they formed a new business plan to bring in veterans like Sheffield and Renteria and compromising the lineup by renewing committments to fading stars they also built a team that is not compatible with Leyland’s managerial style.
.
The gruff, “do it my way” facade doesn’t work as well as it does with the younger more impressionable players.
.
It is also a shame to see JL resort to placating media, fans and players with empty announcements and abrupt reversals of decisions.
.
He has certianly lost a lot of credibility. I realize this has come under times of duress but it has supported the growing fear that this is a rudderless ship in a big ocean.
.
If the team continues to struggle like this I actually think JL will step down on his own. I don’t think DD would fire him.
.

Last night’s game was a combination of bad decisions by JL and bad play by the team.
.
This team is not done until the inter League games are done. That has been our strong point.
.
What JL needs to do is take a day off, and not think about the moves he should make. He should relive all the moves that he has made so far, and learn something from them. It might help more than anything.
.
I don’t normally get this discouraged, but I get a feeling too that maybe, we are losing on purpose, or JL has lost his marbles. Either/Or.
.
Expanding on other’s points :
– Inge was hitting great to begin the season, but had to sit(ok)
– Thames is hitting good, and he not only wants hit to play LF everyday BUT ride the hot bat. Result? He is out of LF and doesn’t even get to Bat at the DH slot.
– Sheff was a liability to the team, and we played him even though it was clear to the lamest guy that he can’t.
-I like Renteria, I know lot of you don’t. But he can’t find AB’s for Santiago, who happens to do everything right when hitting, bunting etc. Look at his numbers. And we find AB’s for clete, Larish .. You name it. Can’t we rather thave santiago bat a run in, .. our Sluggers can’t seem to.
– Take our best starter out of his groove, and give willis a start. Why not give him nate’s slot and piggyback there. JL knows more than anyone that a starter is a creature of habit, like a closer. I would have blasted off if I was AG. It’s pathetic.
.
I know that hindsight being 20/20, these are not a Monday morning quarterback points. If we actually started applying hindsight, we would have a long list of game time decisions, that only JL can be blamed for, for which he is supposed to have foresight.
.
But the above list of blunders make me feel that JL has no clue what to do, or he does but is doing this anyway.

I’m not so sure DD wouldn’t fire JL. It wouldn’t be the first time a GM has made some boneheaded moves then fired the manager when it didn’t work. In fact, it’s very common in sports. Let’s not forget DD fired Phil Garner after six games. Six.
.
Most or all of you don’t want to see Sheffield again. I’m here to tell you that he WILL be back and he WILL play. I’m not advocating it at this point, but we’ll have to accept the fact that it will happen. Sorry guys. It’s all beyond our control, obviously.
.
This is one reality show where the ratings are going to suffer.
