From the Big A

The marathon West Coast trip begins under mostly cloudy skies in Anaheim with a pretty standard lineup:

  1. Granderson, CF
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Sheffield, DH
  4. Ordonez, RF
  5. Cabrera, 1B
  6. Guillen, 3B
  7. Joyce, LF
  8. Renteria, SS
  9. Rodriguez, C

For the Angels, who had the unenviable task of flying back here from a Sunday night game in Chicago and getting here for a 6:05 p.m. local time start:

  1. Maicer Izturis, SS
  2. Gary Matthews Jr., CF
  3. Vladimir Guerrero, RF
  4. Torii Hunter, DH
  5. Garret Anderson, LF
  6. Mike Napoli, C
  7. Casey Kotchman, 1B
  8. Brandon Wood, 3B
  9. Sean Rodriguez, 2B

Hope you all have had a good Memorial Day. Looks like the summer weather finally arrived, at least for a day or two.

the angels hit a lot down 3b line, hope guillen is ready.
go tigers!!!!

why in the world would you not sacrifice with joyce in the 7th?

OK I can’t give it up, I have spent over an hour gathering 1st inning Tiger stats. Here are some of the results.

51 games – 19 first inning runs (6 in one game)
51 games – scored more than 1 run 3 times
Record when scoring in the first inning – 8-4 (how important is the 1st inning?)
Gary Sheffield batting in the first inning 4-27 with 1 RBI – .148 average.
Gary Sheffield with a runner on base in the first inning 0-13.
And even worse – times Sheffield move up a runner with a good out – 0.
Gary Sheffield with 2 runners on – 0-2 with 2 K’s.

I can’t say all of the 1st inning problems have been caused by one player, but….. I have found part of the problem.

The loyalty our coach is showing certain players is not helping.

Sheff is finally starting to hit, so there’s no way JL will pull him for a few weeks now. It’s wishful thinking.

The same is true for moving Guillen to DH. We’ll just have to wait until JL figures things out, pulls Sheff (bless his heart), and puts Guillen at DH.

I beleive he really may do it. It just is going to take until September or something. Anyway, playoff hopes are gone for this year already.

Right now is the time to bring in Inge and Santiago.

Pretty pathetic hitting tonight and Guillen

The hitters have gone comazone again. Just pathetic with runners on and unforgivable strikeout by Guillen who looks way out of place at 3rd tonight

Not real pleased with the decision to bring in Miner. He wilts in situations like these.

I hate when they play liike this. They look like they are going to beat themselves.
Where is Lopez?

Yep, he walks a .235 batter on four pitches… gotta pull him.

I just wonder what happens to these hitters? They just go stone dead on a moment’s notice. 19 runs in one game then they can’t seem to beg one after that.
Very troublesome especially since the starters have recovered enough to give us a little hope.

I did expect Izturis to hit it hard–I did not expect Ordonez to make a better than good catch to rob him.
Dodged a bullet with Miner.
Gotta claw out a couple of runs here and now.

Dan, these Tigers are clueless and clawless.

Bad teams find a way to lose.
