Boras confirms Rogers' decision

"Kenny and I have a longstanding 18-year relationship," Boras said Saturday, "and Kenny made the decision. Kenny is very satisfied with our representation, and he made the decision that representation was something he wanted to take upon himself."

Good developments on Mr. Rogers. Have a feeling he might be back in the fold soon.

Ah, about those 1927 Yanks. They were only 8 years removed from the “dead-ball era”. Other than Ruth and Gehrig, probably not many guys were trying to go deep. Most likely that team still had plenty of punch-hitters. They also played a lot less games than we do now.

So I love our Tigers and think they will have a potent line up in ’08 also. But c’mon comparing them to “Murders Row”, because we hit more hr’s? I don’t think so.

What I said was “With health, these guys statistically challenge the 1927 Yankees.” The key words are “statistically challenge.” I wasn’t comparing eras since that’s impossible. Just projecting what this lineup is capable of if all went well. All rarely goes well, however.

As an interesting historical side note, there is evidence that the real “dead ball era” actually ended along about 1911, when the ball underwent a change in construction. It’s my guess that Babe Ruth changed the approach to hitting, which led to more homeruns. You could also make a strong case that Ruth was actually the best hitter in the history of the game.

Man, I really need some live baseball about now, right? :-)

As all have already stated, this is great news.
Again, I think we will see a decision to remain with the Tigers in 08 in the coming week or so. Nice move Kenny!

My heart really goes out to Scott Boras. The poor guy will have to make do with the tens or hundreds of millions he has made on other players. It was kind of pitiful the way he tried to affirm his wonderful relationship with KR, right after he was fired. Does anyone know where to send a sympathy card?

There you go…get me crying Steve. Hey, could you put my name on the card? I know it doesn’t mean as much but it’s the thought that counts.

Well, A-Rod got the MVP as expected, and Magg got second…but what I found interesting was that Grandy was 10th in voting

YEA STEVE, CAN I GET ON YOUR SYMPATHY CARD TOO? One thing though, please tell Mr. Boras he can represent me this March when I’m up for my next “hit”. Sure some of you who hate him feel the same way, except for the lucky guy whose “job rocks”.

WAZ, great point on Curtis. By the way does anyone besides me think CG still has UPSIDE?

Happy Turkey Day men!

JT – I agree. I think Curtis has just begun to show what he can do. He is going to keep improving year in and year out and continue to be a dangerous part of the lineup.

I see Cleveland has just signed Japanese free agent pitcher Kubayashi. I don’t know if he’ll be any good or not, but I hope we’re not missing the boat in this arena.

I kind of expected to see some reactions here to the Cabrera-Garland trade vis a vis our acquisition of Renteria. All things being equal, I would’ve probably preferred Cabrera, but who knows what we would have needed to give up to get him. The White Sox got kind of a sweet deal, imho. If they also get Torii Hunter, we’ll have something else to worry about…

matt

My initial reaction to that trade, Matt, was that I would trade Renteria for Garland. We could use a starter with his abilities and endurance. I’m just afraid we’re going to lose a bunch of 11-8 ballgames.

The big positive with this trade is we won’t have to face Garland nearly as much now. He kind of owned us.

RLP, why are you so worried about a guy that eats too many hot dogs?

As Mr. Spock’s father once astutely observed, “It is difficult to answer when one does not understand the question.”

*****… oh man, i guess i never imagined seeing a star trek quote here in the Tigers blogs… ***** again…

anyways, back to business, the chisox trade confuses me, since they resigned uribe for 4.5 mil…. why?

as i’ve stated before, i’m a west coast displaced fan, and the angels are down the street, cabrera puts up good numbers, fantastic fielder, but it just seems he never gets it done when needed, and my step-son watches enough angels games to make me want the throw a wrench through the TV.

so i’m not real convinced the chisox upgraded….. they lost quality pitching for a shortshop they didn’t really need. it doesn’t make sense to me, really.

as far as CG goes, i agree, his best years are still ahead of him, i expect to see more 20-20-20′s from him, if not 30′s or 40′s… JL needs to be more agressive on the bases with grandy.

….still think the tigers need to start shopping around for some late inning relief, as rodney can’t carry the team in the 8th every game….

***and god forbid they sign that gascan Gagne.. as stated before, living out here, seen many a dodgers game that i wanted to throw a wrench through the TV, that the boring announcer went on and on about how ‘great gagne is, (when he isn’t hurt)’ (which he always is). that guy gets paid millions to sit around and milk a shoulder injury.

havent checked out the braves site in a while, but i think going after Dotel would be a reasonably good solution. I think he’d pitch with some intensity being on a team with far more potential than the braves, and certainly WAY more potential than the royals. and maybe he can explain to the tigs why we keep getting owned by KC.

have a good turkey day. go lions. beat the pack. i hate brett fav-rah!!! i’ll be watching from the west coast. (every single packers game has been shown on FOX here in LA on directv. i’m about ready to friggen change cable providers if i have to see fav-rah one more **** time after thursday lol)

hasta la bye bye

SPOCK SR. TO RLP:
Takeru Kobayashi, “the hot dog eating champion” vs. your cleveland guy KUbayashi. Bad joke I guess if I have to explain it. The dude was all over ESPN at times over the past couple years.

Anyway, Deadhd, you are right on about the chisox. I wondered the same. Why the two SS’s? Must be a “deal” going down somewhere. Don’t think they are shifting one to second, they got that Taguchi guy there. Guess we have to just wait and see.

I also agree on more bullpen help needed. However, think about it guys……… Most of the concerns we express on this blog are based on the way we finished the 2nd half. When I think back, we had the best record in baseball at the A/S break. And that was with all these same shortcomings. Namely a patchwork bullpen and starting rotation and getting nothing out of Inge. But SHEFF after a slow start was mashing. We were basically bludgening everyone to death.

Maybe DD/JL/Mr.I are convinced if SHEFF comes back strong, Renta is productive and a bit better on defence, etc. etc. the pieces could fit.

Call me an optimist, but if we sign Rogers or a close equivalent, I’m pretty much ready to go to war with these guys. To further my contention:

Can Clev be that lucky again?

Twinkies fading/rebuilding?

Chisox old old and starting another new approach?

KC still a year or two away?

I think “D” rocks in 2008!

Hey Guys– Happy Thanksgiving to all. Seeing that we all have time to comment on the Tigers, we most likely all have plenty to be thankful for. Its been stated before but a definite thanks goes out to Jason for providing this forum.

Here’s some quick thoughts:

1) Rollins won the NL MVP and Granderson was nearly as good in the AL… hmmmm.

2) I can’t believe that the White Sox traded a starting pitcher for an aging shortstop. Thank God the Tigers didn’t … wait a minute… Yup, I’m still bitter about trading Jurrjens. As far as the Chisox are concerned, it doesn’t make much sense– at the worst, Garland is a solid starter that eats innings and he can be dominant. I think Chicago’s really going to regret the trade. (I’m still praying to God that Renteria is solid for two years.)

3) Come on Kenny– get the deal over with. Take a cue from Shilling– you’re worth about 8 mil next year– just sign on the dotted line so we can spend the next few months arguing about what type of relief pitching the Tigers can get for Marcus Thames in a trade.

4) I completely agree about Gagne– save the money. We have enough injury concerns between Zumaya and Kenny. My stomach can’t handle another injured bum.

5) I’m looking forward to the Rule 5 draft. I don’t know why but I really like it– perhaps the Tigers will go after another young reliever to fill a spot in the ‘pen. It didn’t work out last year but Campusano was an interesting pickup last year.

6) If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the video clip on the Tigers home page of Gibby hitting the home run off Gossage. I know we have a lot of long-time Tiger fans on here but that’s the one that stands out for me. I was seven when that game was played and I remember sitting with my dad and asking– why are they pitching to Gibby? I know Willie won the MVP that year but there was no better player than Gibby on that ’84 team. The clip is great as it provides audio I’d never heard from Sparky and **** Williams. The Goose Busters sign still kills me…

That’s all guys. Enjoy the turkey and let’s cheer for the Lions– its nice to actually have a game that matters on Thanksgiving.

I was really hoping that I would log on today and see that Kenny signed. Oh well, perhaps next week (which is when I think it will happen).

JT – I got the referrence to Kobayashi. Thought it was pretty funny. I guess that will be Kubayashi’s new nickname in Cleveland – the hot dog man. humm…

Brent – I did just watch that clip and got chills seeing all those players run outta the dugout like that. I can only imagine how it will feel when we go back to the big dance in 08 and win it all. I am sure we will all be doing that much jumping around in our living rooms, as they are doing on the field.

Anyway….hope you all have a Happy Turkey Day.

I have actually been a Detroit fan (all sports) my entire life. But, I have to admit, I swore off the Lions prior to the 06 season and haven’t watched one of their games since, not even the Thanksgiving Day games.

I basically couldn’t take it how management with the Lions would do what they do and the coaching staff on the field.

Even though their record indicates they are better this year, as always, they can’t win a game (last week) when its needed. Oh well with them!

In any event….have a good day tomorrow all…I’ll be back posting on Monday, when I return to work! ugh!

I stopped following the Hot Dog League in 1983 when they had the Eater’s strike. I stopped following events in Japan in 1945 (joke, I wasn’t born yet). Another Star Trek connection to this, and no, I’m not a Trekkie, my mind just remembers strange and useless things. Wasn’t “Kubayashi Moro” the name of the academy exam that Kirk cheated to win?

ANYWAY, I gave up on the Lions along about 2002, and this after being a season ticket holder in the late 90s. I’ve seen them twice this season. Once was live in Washington, the 34-3 game. Brent, I should have dragged you with me. :-) The second time was Sunday. I expect nothing from them tomorrow.

I did watch that 1984 clip. If you get the entire 1984 WS film, it has even more of that on field and in dugout audio. It’s excellent.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Kobayashi Maru. Happy Thanksgiving, all! Live long and prosper.

matt

I don’t see Jacque Jones as being a major upgrade from Timo. Yes an upgrade but not a MAJOR upgrade.
We still need a starter and a closer or late inning reliever.

my guess is that we will all tread water with those spots being attributed to the signing of TJ and Kenny Rogers.

Not good enough!

DanoBoone:
It would be great to fill your christmas stocking with a sp and stronger closer. Unfortunately, Santa ran out of those, they aren’t out there IMO. The kind of upgrades we are going to get are as you describe, moderate improvements. So, we should keep trying and I know DD will.

The only part of your statement I disagree with is “Not good enough”. I believe if SHEFF can come back healthy enough to be the 2007 first half SHEFF, we are good enough.

We were in first as late as Aug 2nd. G/S hit .303 in the first half with 21 hrs and 58 rbi. In the second half (injuries) he was .203 with 4hrs and 17rbi. Those horrendous 2nd half #’s were all out of the 3 hole. It was like having Ray Oyler batting third other than the 4hr’s (apologies to you young guys).

In august, Gary hit .185 with 1hr and in Sept he was .172 with 1hr.

Assuming that Renteria/Guillen are a modest upgrade over Guillen/Casey, Bondo can at least throw like a .500 pitcher and any of the many other guys “improve” back toward their normal numbers, I think we ARE “good enough” IF Sheff is SHEFF, IMO.

Guys on Nov 25th, I’M OPTIMISTIC!

“The team (Yankess) has finalized their marketing deal with Alex Rodriguez regarding his breaking of home run milestones. He’ll receive $6 million for reaching the home run totals of Willy Mays, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Barry Bonds. And then he’ll get another $6 million for homer No. 763. Yes, that’s $12 million for two homers. The deal has been approved by MLBPA and the Commissioner’s office.
==================================================================

Where have you gone Albert Kaline?

Al once refused a $100,000 offer because he thought no baseball player deserves that much to play a sport they love?

Or a guy like Willie Mays who I know would have played for nothing.

A-Rod should be ashamed of himself.

When a woman accepts money for physical acts there’s a word for that. It applies to A Rod as well.

The essence of baseball has evaporated and we can all thank the greedy owners as much as the players’ union, agents and the players they represent.

I have loved baseball all my life with a passion that may have seemed abnormal to my friends and family. Lost interest (because of the immoral financial aspects of the business) for almost 20 years until I saw some real character in some of our Tiger players.

They have rekindled my interests in spite of absurd contracts, homogenous exhibition and mega merchanting. Then you read stuff like this. It’s at best distasteful, and at worst disgraceful.

I am very pleased that DD did not go after this mercenary dressed in pinstripes.

HERE HERE DANO! WELL SAID!

Dan, WELL STATED! I know your Tiger wish list has been as long as anyone’s, but even so there just has to be some limit to the greed and insanity…at least we can hope. Anyway, none of us on this blog could have stated it any better. Good to see this side of you. AMEN BROTHER!

You guys are right. This is the greatest game of all. I mean this game is spiritual!

For god’s sake I remember my grandfather, who worked for Ford Motors for 46 years, and used to see THE Henry Ford walk thru the plant, telling me about THE GREAT TY COBB. He saw him play in person several times at the old Navin Field (site of Tiger Stadium).

You can’t get the same feeling from any other game!

We’re going to be good this year! Just watch and see.

Ah, yes, the great TY, thank you thank you…oh, you were referring to Ty COBB….ha ha….
Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving.

I’ll second that, I also believe 08 will be a good year for the Tiger faithful!
