Sheffield thinks he'll be back Thursday

If you’re a Tiger fan looking for hope, this might be it. Gary Sheffield’s troublesome right shoulder feels much better after a week with his longtime personal trainer, Larry Mayol, so he feels he’ll be ready when he’s eligible to come off the DL in a couple days. He feels good enough, in fact, that he doesn’t believe he’ll need the one cortisone shot he can take between now and the end of the season.

For now, the Tigers have a DH batting third, but his name is Omar Infante. He’s 15-for-35 in his career off Jon Garland. Expect more situational starts like that for players down the stretch as Jim Leyland tries to find some hot hitters out of his expanded roster.

Why DH Infante and play Magglio Ordonez and his sore heel in right field, you ask? Because Ordonez feels more comfortable playing in the field rather than sitting around between at-bats.
