Why Vasquez?

That was who Tigers minor-league officials recommended was performing the best. The Tigers want Andrew Miller to continue to work on his pitches and command and get some starts under his belt at Double-A Erie. They also want to give Eulogio De La Cruz more time to keep working on his secondary pitches.

Bonderman expects to be able to make his next scheduled start next Friday at home against the Cardinals, so the Tigers have a decision to make come Monday. Assuming they send down Aquilino Lopez to make room for Vasquez, they couldn’t call back Lopez for at least 10 days, even if they wanted to. That’s where the long-term Zumaya fill-in could come into play.

Anyway, here’s the lineup:

  1. Rodriguez, C
  2. Polanco, 2B
  3. Sheffield, DH
  4. Ordonez, RF
  5. Guillen, SS
  6. Monroe, LF
  7. Thames, 1B
  8. Inge, 3B
  9. Granderson, CF

As with last time, Granderson plays over Infante with the lefty starter because Infante is hitless against Santana (0-for-16).
