Clarification on Santiago

He does have a minor-league option left, so the Tigers can send him down at the end of camp without having to sneak him through waivers. Consider that my first action back to work after a few days off.

I think we will find the next few days interesting in terms of roster moves. Barring a trade (which I see as a distinct possibility) I think Santiago goes down along with Big Red, and Timo Perez.

Interesting because they have all had very good springs. I think $$$ will be a factor in retaining Nefarious (I don’t like it much but that’s the way it goes, I guess).

Grilli makes the cut quite easily but IMO should be sweating it out with Miner, Durbin and Seay. I think Miner deserves to stay. All of those guys have outpitched Grilli.

Campusano’s fate is unclear now but I suspect the club will take advantage of puttin him on the 90 day DL.

I sure hope the big boys wake up and start hitting like they will need to (Ordonez, Sheffield, Inge and Guillen)- I would think that neither of them are too turned on by spring Training and I hope that is the reason they do not seem to be hitting with authority.

I would not be surprised to see either of Thames, Infante or Shelton involved in a trade. Infante has not played all that well so far but his saving grace is that no one else can spell Curtis in CF. If Curtis gets hurt Infante is not a logical choice to fill in for any extended period of time which is why we might see him go.

Anyone else at all concerned about Verlander? He looks very undependable right now. A run an inning and poor strikeout ratio. He needs a second pitch to become as good as his first one.

Regarding Justin Verlander, he has made me nervous since last August. I don’t think that he has been at all reliable since then. I do think that he has gotten lucky a few times, ie against the Yankees in the playoffs, (by the way he was not the winner of that game). And he wasn’t dominate in the A’s series even though he won. And last but not least lets not forget what happened in the World Series. And I remember thinking at the time when we lost the 1st game of the world series that was the beginning of the end. I hope he gets back whatever he had going real soon.

Jason,
Not questioning whether Ramon has an option left, but the word I’ve been reading is that he may have to clear revocable Major league waivers to be sent down anyway. It’s a new one on me, but JP Morosi wrote a clarification on Jan. 28th that said, becaues three years had passed since his first day on the 25 man roster, he’d have to clear waivers. Also here’s the info. in another link.

“There is a rule rarely invoked in baseball that creates a situation where a player who has options remaining still has to clear waivers to be sent on an optional assignment. If the assignment is to begin at least three full calendar years from the date of the player’s first appearance on a 25-man roster, then the player can not be sent on an optional assignment without first clearing major league waivers. These waivers are revocable, and players usually clear those waivers without incident.”

I’m guessing that this is a technicality, and that a club wouldn’t claim a player on revocable waivers if they’re just sending them down. One of those “unwritten” rules where clubs let each other slide.

Yes Dan, I have your same concerns about Verlander and I have to agree with gk’s comments. Some guys commented last year that they liked his cockiness;… just a healthy expression of confidence. I don’t much care about cocky attitudes in players. Those were the guys I particularly enjoyed beating. I don’t imagine it’s any different at any level of sports. Justin sure has the gifts and I think he without a doubt has the sweetest delivery on the team. With all his raw talent he doesn’t often have to rely on concentration. When it comes down to needing it, I think it sometimes ain’t there. So then location can become a problem. We all got used to his early success last season and then expected it to continue… Disappointing September and post season. I think he’s got a ways to go to be really good. But that’s my take for what it’s worth. Myself, I’ll take tenacity over cockiness, which is why I like Nate Robertson so much. I think he’s going to have a good year if he stays healthy.
