Guillen

Some of you have asked what’s going on in talks on a new contract for Carlos Guillen. Nothing new to report. In fact, there are no negotiations going on right now, according to a source with knowledge of the situation, but that shouldn’t be construed to mean talks have broken down. They’re just on the back burner right now. Keep in mind, his current contract was signed in the middle of the season back in 2004, so while it might not be great to go into Opening Day without a new contract, it’s not a terrible sign.

As for how much Michael Young’s new contract affects the Guillen talks, well, it’s easy to look at it and see that it can’t hurt Guillen’s side. The length of Young’s contract could be the key more than the annual salary, though Young is a couple years younger than Guillen.

Anybody get to see today’s game? We got to see Cameron Maybin and Kyle Sleeth, while Ramon Santiago continues to make a strong bid to make this team. Not talking so much about his homerun as I am talking about his continued slick glovework. I don’t know, I’d be hard pressed to leave him in Toledo. Seems like if I’m resting an infielder, I’d sure want the best glove I had out there in his place.

Hessman is reminding me of Jay Buhner of the late 90s Mariner teams. Homerun…or nothing.

Also got to hear the Mets play by play team. Ron Darling began as an analyst in Washington two years ago, and was so hesitant that everyone was encouraging him to talk more. I see he’s overcome that, and may even rival Jim Palmer for sheer talkativeness during a game. They make a fairly entertaining team.

It all made for a fun afternoon of baseball. Life is good.
