Late night at the winter meetings

Don’t count out the Tigers from making a bigger move just yet. One report making the rounds tonight has the Tigers as one of six teams involved in talks for Devil Rays center fielder and leadoff man Rocco Baldelli, but other Major League sources suggest the Tigers aren’t on the list. The Marlins are still expected to be the most aggressive in that sweepstakes, but the Devil Rays want/need young pitching, which gives the Tigers a position of strength. Given the mixed signals, though, it could be a case of the Devil Rays using the Tigers to force Florida to improve its offer.

More on Monroe

Dombrowski confirmed that he had discussions with the Orioles this morning, though he wouldn’t confirm the ESPN.com report that it involved Craig Monroe. He said the O’s came to them, not the other way around. He didn’t go into specifics on Monroe, but he said they’re not looking to change anybody in the everyday lineup. In a roundabout way, you can take that to mean (again) they’re listening, but not shopping. Dombrowski did say they’re not close on anything, and that they’re not talking about big deals at this point.

Awards day

Ran into Justin Verlander and Andrew Miller in the hotel today. They’re two of the Tigers who received awards today at the Baseball America banquet. Verlander was named Rookie of the Year. Miller won College Player of the Year. Dave Dombrowski was named Major League Executive of the Year, and Jim Leyland won Major League Manager of the Year. The Tigers, however, missed out on Organization of the Year to the Dodgers. Also, the Major League traveling secretary honored the Tigers’ Bill Brown. And the Tigers training staff — Kevin Rand, Steve Carter and Doug Teter — were named the Major League Athletic Training Staff of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society.

The Baseball America gathering takes up much of the late afternoon, and most of the Tigers front office was in attendance — thus taking away some time to talk. Much like the rest of meetings, it’s relatively quiet on the Tigers front at the moment.
