Soriano

Can’t confirm the reports on what the Nats want (including here and here), but Sanchez and at least one other well-regarded prospect would not be surprising. Washington has a crowded trading block, but Soriano is the one player they can score big on if they deal him. That’s going to be hard to do for somebody who’s a free agent at year’s end and is expected to test the market Between his potential for a big contract, his list of suitors, and the good chance somebody will be willing to let him play second base, the Tigers would have to look at him to rent rather than buy. The Nationals want young pitching, but it’s believed they’d also like to add another middle infielder with Jose Vidro likely gone. I can’t say for sure the Tigers wouldn’t go for Soriano, but whoever gets him, it’s more likely to happen closer to July 31 as the Nationals come to grips with the difference between what they’re asking and what teams are offering.

I do not believe we should give up Sanchez for a ‘rented’ player. That price is too steep. Supposedly the Tigers have already said no to including Maybin and they should do the same for Sanchez. Anybody else in the minors can be traded except those two.

I don’t know much about Sanchez but IMO, why bother? IF Soriano was a much needed lefty hitter then I would say let’s look at it. As far as renting him goes, you can always divest yourself of Young and Jones for next year to free up some dough.
I think it is actually quite important for the club to pick up a solid left-handed bat for the stretch run.

Sounds like Maybin was the guy the Nats were/are interested in. Add him with Sanchez and you have a package that would not be doable. If he were left-handed, it might be different, but you’d still be talking about an expensive rental.

We are not giving up Maybin, that is a given. Everyone is relying too strongly on the opinion that we absolutely need a left handed bat. Make up your own minds don’t only listen to the media. Would Soriano help us come september/october?? YES! He is worth Sanchez, Monroe if asked and a 2nd or 3rd tier prospect. Even if he is a rental we have a great opportunity to imrpove that may not come around again. Of course we do not want to give away our future but we have gained more prospects this year (Through the Draft) then we would lose in a trade. I say go for Soriano

Here’s hoping the Tigers don’t rent Soriano for a couple of months, the price would be too high.
Looking at this team, I would assume the idea is to set up a winner for years to come. This is NOT a veteran team, whose “clock is ticking”. Plenty of fine, young players, with more on the horizon. Why give up the future for this one year?

Of course, if the price is right, and they can SIGN Soriano to a long term contract, then go for it. Otherwise, let’s leave what we have intact, and be contenders for years.

No way the Tigers should go after Soriano. We have some great young pitching, but in a couple years some of it may be gone to other clubs that can afford to pay more. We will need our good, young minor leaguers to be there for us. Secondly, Soriano wants to play second. He won’t stay here after this year. Thirdly, why did the Yanks feel he was expendable? He isn’t that strong a second baseman. The Tigers have begun to develop a good talent base. No time to change the strategy now. This team is beginning to look stronger and stronger. They took 2 of 3 from the Sox. Young may be back and could provide a LEFT handed bat. Who needs to rent Soriano?
